DtBP: Firebrand’s Redoubt - GM Turn Post 12

Reports of other missing dwarves begin to arrive in the crowded marketplace, including dozens of members of the town guard. Mayor Bensik asks people to return to their homes and secure themselves against additional undead incursions, while Erna Stoneheart begins rallying any guards who remain unabducted and uninjured. Both the major and the guard captain ask for your assistance.

The mayor offers you a reward of 3,500 gp to investigate where these undead came from and to rescue as many of her citizens as possible.

As the situation sorts itself, the party may make skill checks to remember and/or gather additional information.

 - Gather accounts of the attack: Diplomacy
 - Recall information regarding the insignia: Knowledge (history) or Knowledge (nobility)
 - Recall information about Lady Delbra: Knowledge (history) or Knowledge (nobility)
 - Gather information from the town folk regarding Lady Delbra: Diplomacy

Please submit your turn instructions using the Player Action Response - Turn Post Template. If you are planning to use a specific skill, please list the skill and the associated roll(s) along with your 5 d20 rolls.

  1. Cando blinks in surprise as the combat ends around him; "Did that just happen?" He says out loud to nobody in particular...

With a shrug, he sets to work assisting the townsfolk in recovering from the attack. He uses his remaining spells to heal, starting with himself and then using any remaining on wounded comrades or townsfolk.

Cando decides to focus his efforts on gathering information about Lady Delbra; Diplomacy with the townsfolk - 18 +7 = 25
    Recalling from his knowledge of history - 11 +7 = 18

    1. Thanks Matt. I had enough actions to finish the fight without your post so I went for it in the interest of keeping things moving. For the record, I had you move and attack but I rolled a 3.

    2. Cando’s efforts bear considerable fruit.

Firebrand’s Redoubt is an old fortress that marks the farthest eastern influence of Davarn and its guards. Local hero Lady Delbera Axebringer constructed it. Discussion with the locals yields the fortress’s precise location down Taggun’s Crawl.

Lady Axebringer had her keep constructed after a relatively long adventuring career, both as a place to keep her trophies and as a forward position from which she and her assembled mercenaries could defend her hometown.

A large group of duergar assaulted Firebrand’s Redoubt about 40 years ago. The dwarves ultimately repelled their Darklands cousins, but many members of the Firebrand Legion died in that defense, including Lady Axebringer. Unable to finance the fortress, Davarn consecrated most of it as a mausoleum for the fallen, only maintaining the foyer as a remote guard station. Erna Stoneheart visited her great-aunt there often in childhood, but has rarely returned since its conversion into a crypt.

Firebrand’s Redoubt had a concealed sally port a quarter mile west; sometimes local kids used it as a clubhouse. Erna confirms this fact and can provide directions to where the port lays.

  3. For 3,500gp, Wahesh thinks that going to a creepy mausoleum populated by undead dwarves doesn't sound so bad. "How bad could it be?"

    1. Baranacleez gathers the facts from the various witnesses. He discerns the following:

So many people were crowded into the market square that the rest of town was all but abandoned.

All of the missing are related to the late hero, Lady Delbera Axebringer, who spent over a century defending Davarn from foreign threats.

All the skeletons’ victims were seen being dragged down Taggun’s Crawl to the east, which connects to other dwarven cities, but the tunnel is hazardous and unpatrolled beyond Firebrand’s Redoubt.

At least one person remembers seeing a bizarre stranger skulking around the east side of town earlier that day—a slight, hooded woman whose feet clopped like horses’ hooves.

  6. Combined efforts from the party turn up the following pieces of information regarding the insignia:

The flaming axe head is the symbol of the Firebrand Legion, a group of local heroes in Davarn. Based out of a subterranean fortress several hours east of the town, they patrolled the underground roads and fought against threats from the Darklands.

The Firebrand Legion was disbanded when many of their number—including their leader, Lady Delbera Axebringer—perished while repelling a larger duergar force 40 years ago.

  7. Ro-Mahn got a 29 and an 18 for Diplomacy. In case there were clues Barny and Co missed.
