The ranger/rogue attacked with his rapier and dealt 8 damage. Erna’s blood continued to flow from her unconscious form.

Barnacleez moved forward and cast Magic Missile at the skeletal champion attacking Lukher. The spell landed and dealt 10 damage. Augmented by Bull’s Strength, Cando charged his weapon with arcane energy and swung his axe with a mighty two-handed blow. The attack connected and dealt 15 damage which destroyed the undead. Having dispatched his foe, the fighter/bard rushed forward with a shout to the aid of Lukher.

Stabem stepped up to flank the left-most skeletal champion. The rogue attacked with his rapier and hit dealing 8 damage and destroyed the undead. Ro-Mahn dropped his rapier and stepped back. He produced a sling and fired a bullet at the center monster but the bullet missed the mark. Erna took another swing with her axe and again missed the monster. The wounded guard captain step back behind Wahesh.

Barnacleez cast a Magic Missile spell hitting the monster dragging Lukher. Three missiles impacted and dealt 10 damage. Cando advanced and attacked the nearest monster. He charged his weapon with arcane energy and took two powerful swings. Both heads of his double-axe landed and dealt 13 and 7 damage. Lady Emyralda converted one of her spells into healing and laid her hands upon Ro-Mahn, healing 17 of the ranger/rogue's damage.

The now left-most skeletal champion stepped between Cando and Stabem. The monster took a swing at Cando, hitting the half-orc for 14 damage and cleaved to attack Stabem. The follow through attack hit the halfling for 8 damage. The right monster stepped to attack Wahesh and Erna. The first blow landed on Wahesh dealing 11 damage and the cleave hit Erna for 8 damage and dropped her. The remaining monster attempted to drag Lukher further but the struggling dwarf managed to escape the pin but not the grapple.

Wahesh attacked the monster in front of him with both of his swords. Each landed but the fighter only managed to deal 3 damage with is longsword. The short sword bounced off harmlessly.

Stabem moved forward and to the left of the monsters. Ro-Mahn moved to the middle and attacked the monster to the left. He stabbed it with his magic rapier before it could raise its weapon in defense. Even though it was not the optimum weapon, the blow still dealt 14 damage. Erna moved to the right of Ro-Mahn and attacked the next monster but the guard captain missed her target.

Barnacleez cast a Bull’s Strength spell upon Cando. The half-orc charged the left-most monster and scored a hit with his double axe. The attack dealt an additional 7 damage to the wounded monster. Once up close, Cando identified the insignia upon the uniforms as belonging to the house of Lady Delbera Axebringer, a local hero.

Lady Emyralda identified the monsters as undead, skeletal champions. She called out that bludgeoning weapons would be most effective and that elemental cold attacks would be useless. Further, she recognized that the monsters were also trained fighters. The cleric moved up behind Ro-Mahn and channeled positive energy to hurt the monsters. A burst of divine energy washed over the enemies. The already damaged foe was dealt 12 damage while the rest took just 6 damage.

The three rear-most skeletal champions attacked the targets in front of them. Each executed a power attack and cleave. The left-most hit Cando for 9 damage but missed Ro-Mahn on the swing-through. The middle hit Ro-Mahn for 14 damage but missed Cando on the follow-up strike. The right-most hit Ro-Mahn for 11 damage and caught Erna with a mighty blow from its urgrosh. The dwarven axe landed and dealt 36 damage. The remaining skeletal champion continued to grapple Lukher and draged the struggling dwarf away from the scene.

Wahesh moved to Erna’s aid and attacked the monster engaged with the dwarf. He swung his longsword but failed to connect with the monster.

Following on the heels of Erna Stoneheart, the party reached the scene of the disturbance. Several defeated guardsmen lay in the street.  Four skeletal monsters dressed in the remains of an armored uniform surrounded Lukher Stinnison. Each wasarmed with a dwarven urgrosh with their uniforms bearing a flaming double-headed waraxe insignia. One of the monsters had the dwarf pinned and was dragging him along as the other three guarded its flank.

DtBP: Firebrand’s Redoubt - GM Turn Post 6

Festival concludes with large, public feast in the market square alongside musical performances and speeches from various important locals. Dinner, served across dozens of buffet tables, consists of mushroom dishes, hearty breads, and beer from downside as well as roast boar, game hens, and fresh greens from the surface. Most attendees bring out their own tables or spread blankets on the cobblestones, and festival-goers wander from blanket to blanket, saying their final goodbyes and sharing one last drink before returning to the trade routes or their everyday tasks.

As the winners of the Spring Muddle, the party joins Mayor Bensik at her table as honored guests, sitting with local officials as well as Erna Stoneheart, who attends as guard captain rather than a competitor. Lukher declines to join the party, claiming he needs to find a few business contacts in the crowd.

About half way through the meal, screams of terror rise from the picnic area near the market square’s far end. A dwarf dressed in a Davarn guard uniform runs into the pavilion and calls to Erna Stoneheart. “Captain, come quickly, they have Lukher!”

Grabbing her axe, Erna Stoneheart follows the guard back into the crowd toward the screaming people.

What do you do?

DtBP: Firebrand’s Redoubt – Turn Results 5

It was a close fought, if unconventional, Spring Muddle. Besides the flags gathered by Cando and Stabem, Lou G’Boo ended up capturing 3 more flags. This resulted in the rest of the team blocking for and assisting Barnacleez through the obstacles that the monkey easily navigated. Since by the rules the familiar was acting as the gnome’s agent, he had to complete the tasks as well for the captured to be counted as valid.

Although defeated, the Davarn Chokers were friendly and congratulatory when the contest was over. They recognized a well fought “battle” and shared handshakes and laughs with the new champions.

In a short ceremony, back in the market square, the party was declared the champions. They were awarded the first-place prize, 2,500 gp, an adamantine battleaxe, and a pearl of power (1st). As the runner-up, the Davarn Chockers were presented 1,000 gp, a masterwork battleaxe, and bracers of armor +1.
