Lady Emyralda wanted to cast a spell again but was forced to struggle against the grasping arms which made casting impossible. Instead the cleric channeled positive and dealt 10 positive energy damage to the haunt. The grasping arms and voices faded and set party free. The haunt was replaced by a thrumming chant of dwarven voices sounding through the room, swearing, “We who are sired by the will to defend.”

The library is filled with biographies and dwarven history books. A collection of scroll cases in one of the cabinets contains maps that the Rising Blades made during their travels in the Darklands, including one of Karexin’s Tower. A bound copy of Delbera’s adventure lies open on the table. Her memoir delves into her time with the Rising Blades adventuring company. The leather binding is rubbed and worn on the spine, and the pages are soft from use. In the stories, time and again she found the good in others and encouraged them to grow beyond their current limitations. Most of her personal narration focuses on her fellow adventurers and their contributions, rather than on her own deeds, painting them in the best light and glossing over some of their failings.

Further searching uncovers three magic three scrolls: cure critical wounds, lesser restoration, and remove curse, as well as a small velvet bag containing 800 gp worth of loose gems and an ornate hand-illuminated book of metallurgy and prayers to Torag. The book is worth 500 gp but might have greater value to the local church or collector.

The party entered the room to begin searching for clues. Almost immediately, Ro-Mahn felt claustrophobic sense of commitment and obligation. This was an indication that a haunt was about to manifest.

Lady Emeralda converted her Consecrate spell into a Cure Moderate Wounds spell and released the energy against the haunt. The positive energy dealt 12 damage to the spiritual manifestation. Barnacleez did the same coaxing his wand of Cure Light Wounds to action; dealing 5 damage to the haunt. The rest of the party stood ready for whatever was to come next.

Mumblings emerged from the floor and walls, stern voices reminding the intruders of their commitments to family and community and demanding they stay “just another season.” Long, sinewy arms emerged, grasped for living creatures. Ro-Mahn and Cando were able to dodge the grabbing spirits while Barnacleez, Lady Emyralda, Wahesh and Stabem were all grabbed and held tight.

The smells of old parchment and lamp oil fill this room. Stone bookcases reach from floor to ceiling along the curved walls. Chairs surround tables loaded with lamps, open books, maps, and scrolls. Cabinets of small statuary and other assorted items line the open remaining wall space.

Wanting to ensure complete investigation of the level, the party closed the door to the room with the stairway and dumbwaiter and proceeded west toward the next unexplored door.

Ro-Mahn and Stabem inspected the door and found it safe to open. Ro-Mahn opened it, revealing the room beyond.

After searching the entry hall and the outer courtyard, the party headed back to the north and west to investigate a couple of unexplored doors.

Ro-Mahn expended 4 charges from one of his Wands of Cure Light Wounds to heal 7 damage from himself and 9 damage from Wahesh.

The party stopped at the first unexplored door. Ro-Mahn and Stabem examined the door. It was not locked and did not show any signs of traps. Ro-Mahn opened the door to reveal the room beyond.

The party braced for another haunt assault but Lady Emyralda, acting on the advice of Barnacleez, cast Dispel Magic targeting the ghostly warriors. The spell was effective and dispersed the haunt. As the images faded, a thrumming chant of dwarven voices sounded through the hall, swearing, “And in the blaze of both, find eternal strength.”

The duergar bodies each wear masterwork chainmail and carried a masterwork heavy crossbow and a masterwork warhammer. 18 gp is found on each body. Additionally, one carried a badger statue carved from topaz and another had a key.

The open doors lead to the exterior of the redoubt. You have seen this before from the other side.

A dwarven-built wall surrounds a courtyard cut into the cavern. Grand doors depicting dour, dwarven faces and angular glyphs stand beyond that open space. The metal doors to the redoubt are ajar, twisted and bent by brute force, and a line of light spills out from the opening. Statuary of dwarves decorates the courtyard, some of them showing signs of recent vandalism. The walkway from the main gate to the front door is littered with debris from the broken statues and overturned benches.

The party moved into the room cautiously expecting the dead dwarves to rise from the dead. They did not. However, Ro-Mahn noticed a scent of leather and fresh blood upon entering the room.

A ghostly image of four armored dwarven soldiers bearing crossbows appeared before the group. An armored, elderly dwarven woman materialized behind them, bearing a resplendent axe, and leveled a dour finger at the party. She orders, “Drive these ashen-faced bastards back! Drive them out!” She seems to be referring to duergar but she is pointing at you. As her words echoed, she faded from the scene as the ghostly soldier raised their weapons.

Four stone columns stand evenly spaced in a square in the center of this foyer. The double stone doors you just opened match the outer doors that stand opposite. The outer doors stand ajar. Narrow slits line the walls that run the length of the room. The stone tile floor and walls are scarred with the signs of a battle long past. Three gray-skinned dwarves lie in dried pools of blood in the middle of the room.

Barnacleez and Lady Emyralda scanned the room with Detect Magic. No additional magical auras were detected.

Wahesh suggested investigating the double doors first. Stabem and Ro-Mahn went to examine the door for traps. No traps were found but the doors were held closed by a newly installed lock. Stabem was able to pick the lock and open the doors to the room beyond.

Barnacleez targeted the remaining undead with another magic missile spell. The bolts of force slammed into the monster and dealt 10 damage. Wahesh moved forward and took another two-handed swing with his longsword. The attack struck true and dealt 6 damage.

Stabem moved around the monster and attacked but missed. Cando charged up his axe, moved forward and took a swing. The half-orc too missed. Ro-Mahn stepped forward to fill the gap between Cando and Wahesh and flanking with Stabem. The ranger rogue thrust with his rapier 17 damage as the weapon penetrated the monster’s skull and destroyed the skeleton.

Lady Emyralda stepped up and cast Cure Moderate Wounds and healed 14 damage from Ro-Mahn.

Each skeleton was wearing masterwork scalemail and carried a masterwork dwarven urgrosh. Each also had a fiendish-looking pin of onyx and tarnished silver driven into its chest. As before, these pins have a 400 gp value.

Barnacleez cast Detect Magic and discovered a magical backpack stuffed in the back of one of the burial niches. The symbol of the Firebrand Legion adorned it front. The gnome identified it as a Handy Haversack and that its name was Chuck. The haversack contained five wool blankets, two tents, two dozen iron spikes, 100 feet of silk rope, a hammer, a crowbar, and 6 weeks’ worth of moldering rations.

Barnacleez cast magic Missile again at the nearest skeleton. The spell hit the monster and dealt 7 damage. The monster turned its attention to Cando and took a swing with its dwarven axe. The attack narrowly missed the fighter/bard.

Wahesh dropped his short sword and choked up on his longsword with both hands. The fighter took a mighty swing which connected and dealt 9 damage to the monster which reduced it to a pile of bones. Stabem tubled away from his opponent to gain flanking with Ro-Mahn. The halfling nimbly moved and attacked the unsuspecting undead from behind. The attack landed and dealt 12 damage. Cando moved forward to engage the next undead. The half-orc took a two-handed swing at the enemy but missed the target.

The monster next to Stabem attacked again but missed the acrobatic halfling. Ro-Mahn took the opportunity to attack the target in front of him with his rapier and short sword. Both weapons hit for 12 and 8 respectively but the monster remained standing.

The skeleton returned the attack on Ro-Mahn and hit for 8 damage. Lady Emyralda channeled the power of her god in a burst of positive energy. The burst washed over the undead and dealt 5 damage to each. The skeleton engaged by Cando, Ro-Mahn and Stabem collapsed into dust.

Banacleez cast a Magic Missile spell at the farthest skeletal warrior. The three missiles slammed into the monster a delivered 13 force damage. The monster responded by charging forward and attacking Wahesh with its dwarven axe. The attack struck true and dealt 11 damage to the fighter. Wahesh attacked in return with both of his swords. The longsword missed but the short sword hit though it did not seem to do any damage.

Stabem moved into the room and tumbled past the advanced skeleton to engage with the next monster. Cando powered up his axe with arcane energy and took a mighty swing at the skeleton in front of him. The axe smashed into the undead for 10 damage as the attack was blunted by the monster’s bony nature.

The skeleton engaged with Stabem took a swing at the halfling but missed its target. Ro-Mahn moved into the room, tumbling past the advanced skeleton and maneuvered behind it. The ranger/rogue poked the monster with his rapier from behind. The weapon pierced through the monster’s armor but only managed to deal 4 damage.

The monster behind Ro-Mahn stepped to gain flanking and attacked. Its axe struck home and dealt 5 damage. Lady Emyralda tumbled out from behind Wahesh to attack the undead engaged with the fighter with her scimitar. The blow landed but bounced off dealing no damage.

The party gathered up the equipment and treasure and continued their investigation by heading south. The passage only went a short distance before opening into a larger chamber.

Statues depicting stern dwarven figures line this hall, separating 60 body-sized niches carved into the walls. A meticulous mosaic of a flame-enshrouded axe covers the floor at the room’s center. Heavy stone doors lead south, and two smaller doors nearly blend into the walls on each side of the main entrance. A short hallway leads deeper into the redoubt.

Five bodies dressed in the uniform of Davarn’s Guard lay on the floor of this room. Three animated skeletons dressed in the trappings of the Firebrand Legion patrol the hall.

Ro-Mahn attacked his opponent with both his weapons. The rapier pierced his flanked foe, dealing 9 damage and killed the dwarf. The rogue the stepped to right right toward the remaining foe and slashed with his short sword. This attack hit too, dealing 17 damage, killed the enemy and ended the combat.

Each dwarf wore masterwork chainmail and carried a masterwork heavy crossbow and a masterwork warhammer. Between the two, they had 36 gp. One was also carrying an elven-made mithral buckler. The pair of silver candelabra from the table are worth 75 gp each.

Upon seeing the enemies, Ro-Mahn rushed into the room, tumbles over the tabletop and landed in position to attack the dark dwarf. The thrust from the rapier was well placed and landed but the dwarf did muster some defense. The attack dealt 14 damage to the duergar. Stabem moved into the room following Ro-Mahn’s lead. The halfling leaped upon the table and stood threatening the dwarf near the right corner of the table.

The duergar attacked by Ro-Mahn dropped his crossbow, grabbed his warhammer and took a swing at the ranger/rogue. The blow landed and dealt 10 damage.

Lady Emyralda moved in to attack the dwarf engaged with Stabem. The halfling swung her scimitar and hit dealing 3 damage. Wahesh followed the cleric and added his sword to the battle. The longsword struck true and overwhelmed the duergar’s defenses dealing 18 damage.

The remaining enemy likewise dropped his crossbow and unslung his warhammer. The dwarf took a swing at Wahesh but narrowly missed the fighter.

Barnacleez produced his wand of magic missile and fired it at the beleaguered dwarf. The spell struck and dealt 3 damage. Cando charged his double-axe with arcane energy and clamored atop the table. The half-orc gained flanking with Ro-Mahn and slammed down his axe with 2-handed fury. The weapon struck and dealt 8 damage.

The party took shelter in the secret corridor behind the theater and rested. Lady Emyralda healed herself and Stabem before bedding down.

The night passed without incident.

After making morning preparations, the party headed out to explore the double doors to the southwest.

A large, stone dining table bedecked with a feast of wax fruit and fake roast meats lies in the center of this room. Silver candelabras sit on either end of the table.

Behind the table, two Duergar scrambled to hostile postures grabbing their crossbows and taking aim at the party.

DtBP: Firebrand’s Redoubt – Turn Results 38

Ro-Mahn jumped to the stage and rushed to the assistance of Lady Emyralda. The ranger/rogue worked to distract the entranced Wahesh. Stabem continued to act out the battle with the spectral members of the Firebrand Legion. Barnacleez cast his last magic missile spell at Lady Emyralda. The force projectiles hit the halfling and dealt 9 damage.

Cando joined Stabem on the stage joining in the battle. Wahesh stepped up to move away from Ro-Mahn and took two swings at Lady Emyralda. The longsword missed but the short sword dished out 6 damage despite the assist from Ro-Mahn. Lady Emyralda tumbled around the fighter and moved out onto the stage. She cast Cure Moderate Wounds against the haunt which dealt 11 damage. Again the haunt rippled but this time it faded away completely. As the combatants disappeared, a thrumming chant of dwarven voices sounded through the theater, swearing, “And wed ourselves to duty.”

With the fading of the haunt, the confusion and compulsion over Wahesh, Barnacleez and Stabem was lifted.

A search of the theater yielded nothing of further interest or value.

Stabem moved passed Wahesh and onto the stage. The halfling joined the battle on Delbera’s side swinging his rapier at invisible foes. Barnacleez watched with rapt attention. The gnome recognized the battle and the inherent danger of the haunt. The sorcerer sent his familiar Lou G’Boo away to hide and drew his wand of cure light wounds.

Cando watched from afar and assessed the scene as it played out. He too recognized the battle and the dangers of the haunt. Wahesh joined the battle but in a different way. The fighter drew his blades and advanced upon Lady Emyralda and took a swing with his longsword. The strike missed the halfling cleric.

Lady Emyralda channeled her last positive energy reserve of the day to damage the haunt. The surge of energy caused the images to ripple as it dealt 11 damage to the manifestation. Ro-Mahn watching from the audience recognized that something was amiss among his companions on and behind the stage.

The recreation of the Firebrand Legion’s battle raged on.

At the sight of the shadowy forms, Ro-Mahn called out to his companions. Stabem looked around suspiciously but held his ground. Barnacleez cast detect magic and looked toward the stage. Cando moved across the stage and into the house to stand before one of the doors. Wahesh and Lady Emyralda waited to see what happened next. Ro-Mahn crossed the stage and took a seat in the first row.

Figures of the Firebrand Legion appear on stage amid a din of combat, locked in battle. The ghostly image of a middle-aged Delbera appears, her flaming axe in hand, ordering, “Rally to me and shields out! Don’t give them an inch!”

Wahesh, Barnacleez and Stabem were all caught up and enthralled by the scene playing out before their eyes.

Faded blue curtains line the stage on the southeastern side of this theater. The benches, stage, and framing have all been carved from the living stone. A yellowed playbill still hangs from the doors, promising “A night of excitement, friendship, and sacrifice in Dawn Shines on the Legion.”

After investigating the prop room, the party checked out the door to the north. It led to an east-west passage connecting to the grand hall via a secret door and a staircase leading up. The party opted to explore the western door instead.

Lady Emyralda pocketed the wand of cure moderate wounds. The halfling assessed the injuries of the party and channeled positive energy to fully heal Ro-Mahn and Wahesh and 10 damage from Stabem.

A search of the room yielded some interesting items.

Ro-Mahn found four life-sized statues of kobolds. They were hollow and cast in copper. He estimated each to be worth 150 gp.

Barnacleez used his Detect Magic spell to locate an aura coming from the drawer of a dressing table. Inside he found a hat. The gnome studies the item and determined that is was a Hat of Disguise. “He says his name is Lon.”

Cando located a handful of scripts penned by Lady Delbera. These included The Fall of Karexin, The Wedding of Riellal, and Dawn Shines on the Legion. These three scripts describe the period in Delbera’s life when she transitioned from roving adventurer to stalwart defender of Davarn. While none of the scripts are especially groundbreaking or valuable, The Fall of Karexin tells the tale of how her adventuring band, the Rising Blades, entered Nar-Voth to stem the tide of undead plaguing a small town in Andoran. The Rising Blades discovered the origin of the raiders—a fey necromancer named Karexin—and, in the process, saved the svirfneblin village of Oremont. The Rising Blades, assisted by the svirfneblin, eventually triumphed over Karexin and his undead hordes, finally casting his body into the abyss.

Spending time reading the scripts will grant a bonus to Knowledge (history) or Knowledge (local) checks related to Lady Delbera and the Rising Blades.

Once the room had been searched to satisfaction, Wahesh opened the northern door.

The room beyond the infirmary is filled with theater costumes and props. Dried makeup and dry, rotting costumes give the room a musty smell. Fake treasure troves and plaster monster masks are carefully stored in the cabinets. The room looks unused for many years.

Lady Emyralda took some time to examine the wand and determined that it was a Wand of Cure Moderate Wounds with 17 charges remaining. The rest of the party searched the room but did not find anything else of interest or value.

Wahesh suggested that the party investigate the next door to the north. Ro-Mahn did not sense any traps and the door was unlocked. The fighter again opened the door and looked within.

The room beyond the door is set up as an infirmary. The room looks unused for many years. A wand is laying atop one of the tables.

A single door is on the northern wall of the room. The passage continues to the west with two doors along the southern wall and opening in the north at the far western end. Double doors to the southwest and the southern branch of the passage remain unexplored.

Taking the lead, Wahesh guided the party to the northern door. Ro-Mahn did not sense any traps and the door was unlocked. The fighter opened the door and looked within.

The double doors to the north also bear a sturdy lock. Similar to the other entrance to the grat hall, hastily painted letters spell out “Danger, do not enter” in Undercommon.

The double doors to the east open into a well-furnished room. This pentagonal room is decorated with comfortable chairs and sofas around a fireplace. A small bust of Delbera Axebringer sits in the northernmost corner.

The passage continues to the south and northwest. Double doors to the west and a single door to the north are immediately visible.

The party investigated the northern door further. The dwarven runes read, “Those who stand against injustice, those sired by the will to defend, announce yourselves and enter.” The door was determined to be both physically and magically locked and warded.

Lady Emyralda, Ro-Mahn, Baracleez and Cando all tried to announce themselves as friends and proclaim their good intent but this had no effect on the barrier.

Efforts by Ro-Mahn to finesse the opening were unsuccessful. Efforts by Cando to pry open the door were equally ineffective.

The party moved on to investigate the rest of the redoubt, starting with the unexplored passage to the southwest. Before leaving the room, Ro-Mahn had an epiphany regarding the voices trailing after the defeated haunts. The ranger/rogue recalled the phrases, “We who court the ways of honor” and “By sweat and blood, we have come here”.

Stabem stepped to the side to gain flanking with Lady Emyralda. The rogue attacked the monster with his rapier but failed to connect this time. Cando again charged his axe with arcane energy and took a powerful swing. The attack scored a hit dealing 21 damage which was blunted by the creature’s rocky composition.

Ro-Mahn waited for Lady Emyralda to withdraw from the immediate combat and stepped in to take her attack position. The ranger/rogue stabbed with his rapier from a flanking position. The attack struck true and dealt 17 damage but the monster deflected a portion of it.

Barnacleez cast a bull’s strength spell and sent Lou G’Boo to deliver it to Cando, renewing the expiring application. Wahesh dropped his short sword and took a two-handed grip on his longsword. The fighter took a powerful swing which connected with the monster. The resulting 13 damage, while blunted, was enough to scatter the stony pieces of the supernatural threat.

With the monster’s defeat, a thrumming chant of dwarven voices sounded through the hall, swearing, “We who court the ways of honor.” The images of Delbera and the half-orc faded away.

Stabem charged forward and attacked the newly formed adversary. The halfling stabbed with his rapier and scored a hit for 20 damage. While a well-placed hit, the weapons did not seem to wound the monster as much as expected. Cando charged his axe with arcane energy and stepped up to attack the creature. He took a swing with his weapon, hitting for 11 damage but was left feeling that only a small portion of the damage was actually inflicted.

Ro-Mahn surged forward and attacked with his rapier. The rogue hit for 15 damage but felt that the thrust was deflected by the creature’s stony composition. Lady Emyralda stepped forward and attacked with her scimitar but the cleric’s attack failed to connect.

Barnacleez recognized the monster as some sort of animated object made of stone. The gnome produced his wand of magic missile and fired upon the construct. The force missile landed and dealt 5 damage. Wahesh drew his weapons and joined his companions in attacking the creature. The fighter’s longsword chopped into the mass of stone dealing 6 damage which appeared to be ignored by the monster.

With a bellow of rage, the construct swatted Stabem dealing 12 damage. It directed a follow-up attack at Cando but it missed the half-orc.
