GoM: The Festering Blot - GM Turn Post 4

Some sixty feet ahead on the road, a villager is lying curled on the ground, his hands shielding his face from two ugly, blue-skinned creatures with over-sized, wrinkly heads. Two centipedes as big as a large man hiss menacingly at the desperate, shaking villager, their mandibles oozing with venom. The monsters are covered in a greasy, purplish goo that seems to be growing from their very skin.

As she seemed to have the most knowledge of the estate, the party asked Nolaria to accompany them to the Sarini Estate. Rooms were arranged for at the Witch’s End Tavern and the party spent the night in comfort. The next morning after breakfast, the group headed out of town once more.

Travel to the estate from Saringallow mostly involved following the road called Nobles’ Folly to the north. Nolaria estimated that the trip should take about 3 hours but could take a bit longer with shorter, slower strides. A couple of hours into the trip, a commotion in the road presented itself.

GoM: The Festering Blot - Turn Results 2

The party discovered the following pieces of information doing research in the library:

Hangings: No official records of the Sarini hangings exist in the library. Ro-Mahn knows that Chelish laws would have required a considerable amount of paperwork if trials had been held. There are, however, allusions to the town abruptly coming under control of the mayor, rather than nobles.

Luca Sarini: A death certificate says the following: “Adolescent ward of half-Mwangi descent. Died of an accidental poisoning at the Sarini Estate in 4599 ar.” Ro-Mahn realizes that the handwriting of the word “accidental” shows hesitation, as if writer didn’t believe that the poisoning was accidental.

Marcius Sarini: A deployment letter dated 4585 ar indicates that Marcius Sarini volunteered to serve in the Chelish army and trained to lead a special engineering unit. Ro-Mahn deduces that his training involved building traps and sabotage, among other things.

A letter from a servant dated after Marcius’s return also indicates that the rising baron brought a young ward by the name of Luca back to his family’s estate in Saringallow. Ro-Mahn notices that the word “ward” is written messily, with no further accompanying explanation, as if the writer were uncomfortable lingering on the topic for long.

Missing Persons: Between the years 4600–4604 ar, many missing persons were reported. Each of the researchers notices that the average age of the missing persons was 12–20, and many of them were female.

Reports written by a watch captain of the time indicate that the bodies of a few missing people were found. Barnacleez and Lady Emyralda notice details in the reports that suggest the persons were killed in witch or diabolist rituals. Lady Emyralda concludes further that in all cases, from the death descriptions listed, the cause of death was complete exsanguination as opposed to simple blood loss.

Sadira Sarini: Documents indicate that the baroness was originally from Remesiana in Cheliax.

Saringallow: The first records about settlers moving into this area date back to 4425 ar. However, all the documents from that time refer to the community as “Sarini’s Hollow.” Each of the researchers notices that somewhere between 4600 ar and 4610 ar, the town’s name seems to have changed to Sarini Gallows, and gradually, that name was corrupted into Saringallow.

Sarini Estate: An invoice for construction materials reveals that the construction of the main estate building began in 4426 ar, and a later bill indicates that a wall was built around the grounds in 4600 ar. Barnacleez noticed that the text has been tampered with to obscure some details.

Another individual document indicates that the last legal owners of the Sarini Estate were the Baron Marcius Sarini and Baroness Sadira Sarini, who acquired joint ownership of the property in 4593 ar.

Sarinis’ Diabolism: There are no documents that even mention the word diabolism or any other outward indicators of the subject; however, Lupia is a skilled archivist and has dug up some letters from Marcius Sarini to an unnamed priest of Asmodeus in Egorian. The letters contain vague and cryptic language, but they do mention the existence of gifts for a nebulous patron, and that these gifts were carefully recorded somewhere in a secure location on the estate known only to Marcius and Sadira. Barnacleez and Lady Emyralda arrive at the conclusion that this is a reference to diabolic sacrifices and the records the mayor seeks.

The party uncovered the following rumors by asking around town:

  • “Those evil Sarinis were hanged—they were hanged high! Ever think where the ‘gallow’ in Saringallow comes from?”
  • “All Sarinis, red or blue, slit your throat or we’ll hang you too!”
  • “Goblins have taken over the abandoned Sarini Estate! The town watch ought to do something about it!”
  • “The Sarini Estate is haunted! Hungry ghouls and ghosts lurk in the shadows!”
  • “The Sarinis worshiped demons and devils, and they held unspeakable revels at their estate back in the day!”
  • “The Sarinis kidnapped children and drank their blood.”
  • “They say there’s a funny smell coming from the estate, and it’s the smell of rotting corpses.”
  • “Some folks say they’ve seen little blue people near the estate!”.

Nolaria provided rough details about the layout of the Sarini Estate. See the map in the current Combat Map position.

Both Nolaria and Nixa have volunteered to escort you to the estate but only one of your choice will accompany you.

GoM: The Festering Blot - Turn Results 2A - The Archives

After about 8 hours, Barnacleez, Ro-Mahn, Lady Emyralda and Nixa concluded their research at the Town Hall. After thanking Lupia Mariette for her assistance, the group headed to the Witch’s End Tavern to reunite with the rest of the party to compare notes and get some rest and refreshment.

As they walked, Nixa made an offer, “When you are ready, I will be glad to show you the way to the Sarini Estate if you like. I do not know anything about the place other than where to find it.”

Need Your New Character Sheets

We are almost to the point where we will absolutely need level 3 character sheets.

I have Ro-Mahn and the character sheet has been posted.

Please advise of any new or changed marching order and other standing orders.

GoM: The Festering Blot - Turn Results 2B - The Rumors

Wahesh, Cando and Stabem stayed at the Witch’s End Tavern for an hour chatting with Alcie Kruptin and her patrons. During that time, they heard a lot of the following sentiment, if not verbatim responses, when asking about the Sarinis, “Those evil Sarinis were hanged—they were hanged high! Ever think where the ‘gallow’ in Saringallow comes from?”

They also heard from one of the patrons, “Goblins have taken over the abandoned Sarini Estate! The town watch ought to do something about it!”

The party moved on to the Temple of Erastil to check on Gellion. The boy seemed to be on the mend and his spirits were raised upon hearing of Nixa’s rescue and safe return to town. Wahesh stayed to talk with Father Ildris and Nolaria while Cando went across town to visit Petrello’s Haberdashery and Stabem went to Dependable Drummady’s.

Wahesh spent 2 hours catching up with the pair and other folks at the temple. Father Ildris repeats the nursery rhyme that many of the locals related at the tavern. Nolaria offers, if no one else has offered, to show the party the way to the Sarini Estate but she fears that there may be fiendish creatures there. She can describe the complex’s rough layout, including the main house, the stable, the mausoleum, the gazebo, and the general courtyard area but she has never actually gone within the estate’s walls. [A map will be provided later.]

Cando’s visit to the haberdashery took a total of 3 hours. Petrello Pindlion, his daughter Betrona and his customers proved willing to talk and had strong opinions on the subject. Many subscribed to the goblin infestation theory first heard at the tavern but the half-orc did pick up a few new nuggets; “The Sarini Estate is haunted! Hungry ghouls and ghosts lurk in the shadows!”, “The Sarinis worshiped demons and devils, and they held unspeakable revels at their estate back in the day!” and “The Sarinis kidnapped children and drank their blood.”

Stabem’s visit at Dependable Drummady’s lasted 3 hours. The halfling chatted up Drummady Laterna, her son Pavolus and various customers over that time. The Drummady related the belief that the estate was haunted while her boy provided his understanding that “Some folks say they’ve seen little blue people near the estate!”. One of the customer provided an observation, “They say there’s a funny smell coming from the estate, and it’s the smell of rotting corpses.”

When done at the temple, Wahesh headed back across town to Pricknettle’s Potions and Poultices. He spent another 3 hours talking with Majara Pricknettle and perusing her wares. He also spoke with other customers as they came and went. He only learned more about how the estate was purported to be haunted and how the Sarinis were justifiably hung.

When done at the hatter’s, Cando headed over to Gunty’s Hearty Breads. He found Gunty Keronna and Noemi hard at work baking and selling their goods. Talking with the merchant, his apprentice and various customers over a couple of hours did not yield any new information.

When done at the cobbler’s, Stabem checked out Saringallow’s Sundries. The halfling spent 2 hours talking with staff and various customers but he did not come away with anything new or interesting.

After a full day of interviewing people, Wahesh, Cando and Stabem met back at the tavern to compare notes, have a drink and a bite to eat.

GoM: The Festering Blot - GM Turn Post 2B - The Rumors

Wahesh and Cando agree that the best place to start the investigation is the Witch’s End Tavern. Alcie Kruptin smiles as the adventurers enter her establishment. She clears a place for you at the bar, wiping it down with a bar towel as she asks, “How long do you plan to visit? Will you be needing a place to stay?”

When asked about the Sarinis Estate, she claims no knowledge but she does recall that a well-known local nursery rhyme starts as follows:

“All Sarinis, red or blue, slit your throat or we’ll hang you too!”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How this works mechanically is that you spend 1d4 hours chatting up the locals and you may make a Diplomacy or Knowledge (local) check. If you succeed, you get to hear a rumor. By each increment of 5 that you succeed by, you will hear an additional rumor. During this time, chatting up NPC(s) that you know will get you an additional rumor.

Please advise which locations and order you plan to visit them. A set of 5d20 rolls should be enough.

There are a finite number of rumors and they are determined randomly. Duplication may be encountered.

GoM: The Festering Blot - GM Turn Post 2A - The Archives

You have little trouble locating Lupia Marietti. She is a friendly and attractive, human woman. She agrees to assist you in your research. If you give her a search topic, she will gladly retrieve all documents related to the subject in question.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How this works mechanically is that you can provide a keyword and Lupia will located the relevant documentation. That will give you some information on the topic and may reveal additional keyword topic. There will be at least one related skill check, that if passed will reveal a deeper understanding or new insight of the information presented. Because of the boon from the last chronicle, Nixa will provide you a +2 bonus to these rolls.

Please provide any Keywords that you would like to research and a set of 10 d20 rolls. If a new Keyword comes up during the research, please request it in a new comment.

There are a finite number of Keyword that have any bearing on this adventure.

GoM: The Festering Blot - Turn Results 1

The party took leave of the mayor and set out to gather more information. Before the party members go their separate ways, Nixa relates, “Those evil Sarinis were hanged—they were hanged high! Ever think where the ‘gallow’ in Saringallow comes from?”

Barnacleez, Ro-Mahn, Lady Emyralda and Nixa stayed at Town Hall and sought out the mayor’s assistant, Lupia Marietti.

Wahesh, Cando and Stabem decided that their skills (and attention spans) were better suited to interacting with the townsfolk.

GoM: The Festering Blot - GM Turn Post 1

In the interest of keeping our current momentum, we can start the next adventure without new character sheets but cannot go too far. There are potentially some investigating and legwork at the beginning.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once again the party finds themselves within the mayor’s office.

Although it’s covered in a layer of files and paperwork that indicate its official nature, this office is also eminently comfortable, with its plush carpet, velvet-lined oaken furniture, and ornate serving carts bearing colorful fruit and fine drinks. The soothing smell of sage and apple blossoms floats on a warm breeze wafting through the large, open picture window.

At the center of the room, behind a solid and polished wooden desk, sits Mayor Sandra Trinelli, her long fingers folded together in thought. Her face is solemn as she surveys her visitors. “Thank you for your quick attention to my request,” she begins, motioning to the oversized chairs in front of her. “As you can imagine, it involves a delicate task that promises results of great significance to our beleaguered population. Let me explain.

“The history of this town, I’m afraid, is written in blood. More than a century ago, the family that founded Saringallow committed heinous crimes against the hard-working folks who toiled on their behalf. When all was said and done, these nobles—the Sarinis—kidnapped and murdered many local children. They were hanged for their crimes, but the bodies of the youths were never found, and our families still suffer those tragic memories today. After all of these years, they’ve never had closure, and our town has never been the same.

“However, not long ago, while I was searching the town archives, I discovered a few old letters that seem to indicate that these evil nobles kept records of their victims and diabolical rituals. Finding these documents would go a long way toward healing the deep wounds the Sarinis inflicted on our poor people.

“Unfortunately, the evidence is presumably stored in the Sarinis old, walled estate, which is located some distance from Saringallow proper. Around here, superstitions regarding the Sarini family still run deep, and the good men and women of our town watch— bless their hearts—are reluctant to help. There’s no proof, however, that any of the rumors about the Sarini Estate are real, so I’d like to hire you help me solve this matter. Please, if you will, bring me any records of these terrible crimes that exist. Once you do, I believe our town will finally begin to heal. I trust that you are capable, and I hope that a reward of 100 gp will be enough to persuade you to help.”

Do you have any additional questions for the mayor?

GoM: What Lurks in the Woods – Turn Results 46

Ro-Mahn circled around the bugbear and stabbed quickly with his rapier. The blade found its mark and sunk deeply into the monster’s chest dealing 10 damage. With a look of mixed rage and surprise, the bugbear slumped to the ground.

Wahesh attacked the goblin rider. His longsword struck home and inflicted a 11 damage. The blow vanquished the foe. The fighter turned his short sword on the goblin dog. The blade successfully slashed the monster for 3 damage. With damage dealt, Wahesh stepped back to make room for his fellow adventurers. With a roar and laughter, Cando dashed forward and targeted the remaining goblin with his double-axe but missed his target with the swing.

The goblin dog stepped after Wahesh but missed with its bite. Barnacleez activated his wand, Missy, again and plugged the goblin dog for 4 damage with the Magic Missile. The wounded Nixa rushed from the cage, grabbed the fallen bugbear’s falchion and moved to engage the goblin dog. The swing of the blade connected with a satisfying crunch, sinking deeply into the monster and dealing 10 damage which killed it.

The last goblin turned to attack Cando. The monster swung its short sword at the half-orc but missed. Stabem stepped to the right and flanked the goblin with Cando. The rogue lashed out with his rapier and dealt 5 damage.

Lady Emyralda moved up to Nixa and healed 8 damage from the fighter by spontaneously casting Cure Light Wounds.

Ro-Mahn moved to engage the goblin and finished it off with a lick from his rapier.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other than a potion of Cure Moderate Wounds, a search of the dead goblins and bugbear does not yield anything noteworthy.

The rescued woman is Nixa Volsetti, cousin to Nolaria Wintren of Saringallow. She was captured by Gellion at the same time as Nolaria but was later dragged off and given over to the goblins. “The goblins dragged me from the woods and brought me here. They questioned me about Saringallow and its defenses. They had some sort of heinous plan to turn me against the townsfolk. The bugbear, Mezodarath, planned to feed me something call Demon Bile. He explained that I would be sent into town to recruit allies and infect people. I am not sure how this would work because I would never willing serve these monsters. They kept me in the cage for the entirety of my captivity.”

Nixa thanks you for your part in saving her. “Your entrance was just what I needed to break that monster’s grasp. If I had my weapons, he would not have man-handled me quite so successfully.”

“During my time here, I overheard the bugbear jabbering on about something named Wormgnash, and he often mentioned that name when talking about the old Sarini Estate. The bugbear seemed to be either praying to this Wormgnash or beseeching its favor. I fear this bodes ill and that a potentially serious danger may now lurk in or near the estate.”

A search of the rest of Highfort yields the following:

Southeastern-most structure (Mezodarath’s Quarters) -
This wooden shack is built more soundly than the others. It contains a large bed stained purplish-black with sludge, and a short wooden table piled high with maps and papers.

The papers on the table include maps of Isger, particularly of the areas around Saringallow, all of which are annotated with invasion plans. The remaining papers on the table constitute a journal of Mezodarath’s increasingly disjointed thoughts.

The gist of the journal:

After the Goblinblood Wars, Mezodarath’s mother retreated into the peaks west of Saringallow, she raised her son on a steady diet of bitterness against humans and wishes for glorious redemption for all goblinkind. Throughout Mezodarath’s early life, the bugbears moved from underground lair to underground lair, avoiding the human patrols that periodically swept through the area. Mezodarath grew more deranged daily, eventually obsessing over the obeisance his mother paid to a being she called the Mother of Monsters, the supposed agent of the goblinoids’ second rising.

Eventually, Mezodarath became convinced that he would lead the goblinoids’ next glorious uprising, destroying of all humans in his path. He left his mother and emerged on the surface, moving east toward Saringallow. Along the way, he conquered a disparate band of goblins—the scattered descendants of a few Goblinblood Wars survivors who quickly came to see the powerful young bugbear as a savior. Mezodarath marched the goblins further east, where he fortuitously discovered the remains of a destroyed fort. There, the goblinoids trained and recruited other wandering goblins for their eventual attack on the unsuspecting residents of Sarringallow.

Just a few weeks before Mezodarath planned to attack, though, a strange creature approached the goblin scouts that skulked outside of Saringallow. The creature convinced the goblins to introduce him to Mezodarath. The creature named Wormgnash offered to teach Mezodarath further in the ways of Lamashtu. Wormgnash mixed a substance from his body with the mud and bade Mezodarath and his goblin followers to bathe in the pool but warned them not to eat the mixture. He claimed that the disease carried by the mixture would kill camp in short order. The goblinoid grew strong and powerful as a result of this command.

Before the Wormgnash left the goblins’ fort for a better lair, he coached them on their upcoming assault on Saringallow. He described the town and the surrounding area to the goblins, and told them to keep an eye on the residents’ comings and goings. Wormgnash instructed the goblinoids to attack when the townsfolk seem the weakest, cause as many casualties as possible, and force-feed Demon’s Bile to anyone they did not outright kill.

Eastern-most structure (Leeza’s Workshop) -
Crudely fashioned tools hang from hooks along the eastern wall. Drawings of questionable skill cover the remaining walls, depicting humans being crushed, dismembered, or otherwise mutilated by elaborate and impractical traps.

You find diagrams of the trap located upon the stair, and a variety of other death traps, many of which incorporate brown mold. The tools on the wall are a set of Masterwork artisan tools for Craft (traps).

The northeastern-most structure is a storehouse. It mostly contained filthy goblin supplies. You do however find a set of pearl and silver earrings worth 50 gp.

The center-most structure (Shrine to Lamashtu)-
The exterior: In the center of the yard, a stubby rectangular building sits upon a roughly hewn stone foundation. A crude depiction of a three-eyed face decorates its door.

The interior: The floor of this small building is recessed into the ground about a foot and filled with viscous purplish ooze. A crudely carved image of a three-eyed face decorates the far wall.

You recognize this ooze as Demon’s Bile. It may be destroyed as you have previously done.

Each of the carving’s three eyes is set with a faceted peridot; the gems are worth 50 gp each.

The remaining three structures are goblin bunkhouses. These foul-smelling buildings are filled with filthy piles of rags and straw.

Upon returning to Saringallow, the you can collect any bounties owed by providing proof of the goblins’ death, describing the scene at Highfort, and generally explaining the situation to Mayor Sandra Trinelli. Nixa Volsetti also provides testimony.

[This concludes the adventure Gallows of Madness: What Lurks in the Woods]

Almost Done

We are almost finished with this portion of the adventure. I expect only two or three more turns. Once we are finished, I will send out chronicle sheets. They will earn you 3 XP, 4 PP and 1536 GP.

That means that you will need to level up to 3rd. In addition to the normal things you get for leveling, do not forget to add 3 charges to your wand of cure light wounds provided from the Temple of Erastil on the first chronicle sheet.

If anyone wants to bow out of the game, this is the time to do so.

Once I receive all of the updated characters, we can begin the third portion of the module, The Festering Blot.

Ro-Mahn rushed forward and past the goblin nearest the door to engage the bugbear. The rogue stabbed with his rapier and dealt 19 damage. Washesh moved in and attacked the goblin to the north with his longsword. The blow landed dealing 8 damage and dropped the monster. Cando moved through the gate and attacked the goblin straight ahead. The half-orc swung his double-axe and landed a blow that dealt 10 damage and dropped the monster.

The goblin rider maneuvered around Wahesh and jumped from his mount. Both monsters attacked the fighter but neither managed to score a hit.

Barnacleez moved to the open gate and targeted the bugbear with his wand of Magic Missiles. The spell streaked from the wand and hit the monster for 3 damage. The unarmed Nixa attempted to attack the bugbear but missed. She received a nasty slash from the monster’s falchion that dealt 10 damage. The fighter retreated deeper within the cage to regroup.

The remaining goblin moved to attack Wahesh but it missed.

Stabem moved through the gate and engaged the goblin rider. The halfling struck with his rapier and dealt 3 damage.

With a bellow of rage, the bugbear called down the power of his dark god, Lamashtu, and channeled negative energy. Nixa, Wahesh, Stabem and Cando suffered 5 damage each while Ro-Mahn took only 2 damage. The monster stepped away from Ro-Mahn, back toward a tunnel.

Lady Emyralda moved through the gate and cast a Bless spell.

Barnacleez and Lou G’Boo returned to the party and filled them in on what the monkey had seen. Cando cast Cure Light Wounds upon himself, healing himself to full.

Realizing that the human woman might be Nolaria’s missing cousin, Nixa Volsetti, and that time was of the essence, Wahesh opened the gate to confront the monsters and stepped into the opening.

The large monster near the cage turned out to be a fiendish bugbear. It was ranting in common “it is all your fault” as it strangled a human woman. Opening the gate caused enough of a distraction for the woman to break the monster’s grasp. Upon seeing the party she called out hoarsely, “Quickly, kill them all! They plan to bring death or worse to Sarringallow and us all.”

Bellowing in rage, the goblinoids joined the battle.

While the rest of the party formed up around the gate, Barnacleez moved to the north and cast Speak with Animals. The gnome instructed Lou G’Boo to climb the fence and survey what was on the other side. The monkey scampered up and over to take a look.

Lou G’Boo quickly returned to give her report. She saw three smaller creatures like the ones you just fought, another on one of the dog things and a larger creature covered in purple growths.

The walls and ceiling here are covered with innumerable crude paintings, all depicting goblinoid figures engaged in all manner of violent acts. Two large metal cages occupy the north and west walls.
