Lady Emyralda cast a Guidance spell on Cando. Wahesh exited the swarm, moving toward the remainer of the party. Not wanting to clump with the rest of the party, Cando maneuvered away, moving to the right of the swarm. Stabem stumbled from the midst of the spiders, looking green around the gills, and headed toward the southern portion of the warehouse.

The swam moved to the largest concentration of potential food sources. The spiders enveloped Lady Emyralda, Barnacleez, Lou G’Boo and Wahesh. They took 1, 1, 3 and 2 damage respectively. Lady Emyralda, Barnacleez and Lou G’Boo all fought off the spiders’ venom. Unfortunately, Wahesh continued to unsuccessfully fight the effects of the poison and suffered an additional 2 Strength damage. The stomachs of the cleric and the familiar turned, forcing them to become violently ill. The sorcerer and the fighter fared better and kept their breakfasts down.

Lady Emyralda stumbled out of the swarm and regained her composure. Ro-Mahn reached into his belt pouch and retrieved his vial of acid. The rogue targeted the arear of the swarm that Lady Emyrald had just vacated. The flask smashed, burning the swarm for 1 damage. The volatile liquid also splashed onto  Barnacleez and Lou G’Boo for 1 damage each. Wahesh moved out of the swarm, putting some distance between it and the rest of the party. The fighter then retrieved his flask of acid. Cando fetched out his vial of acid and readied to throw it if the swarm headed his way. Barnacleez fled toward the warehouse door and cast a Disrupt Undead spell at the Demon Bile growth causing a section of it to wither into dust. Stabem pulled out his acid and threw it at the swarm. The vial smashed in the swarm’s center causing 6 damage.

Cando, Barnacleez and Lady Emyralda stepped forward. The fighter stood guard as the two spellcasters cast Detect Magic and scanned the area. Wahesh and Ro-Mahn moved forward with their cold iron weapons drawn. They planned to try to destroy the Demon Bile without expending any resources. Stabem followed intending to check the door for traps. As Wahesh stepped within five feet of the door, there was a quivering within the demonic growth. Cando shouted a warning as the mass erupted, releasing thousands of diminutive spiders.

The swarm of spiders rushed over Wahesh, Ro-Mahn and Stabem. Each suffered 5 damage from numerous bites. Ro-Mahn and Stabem avoided the effects of the swarm's poison but Wahesh fell victim and suffered 2 Strength damage. Contact with the crawling arachnids proved too much for Stabem and the rogue lost his breakfast as his stomach turned.

Gallows of Madness: A Foul Breed - GM Turn Post 37

The rusty front doors of this large, dingy warehouse are slightly ajar, as if someone forgot to close them entirely. Sprawled across the door and the southern side of the building are thick, disgusting, purplish-black strands that pulse with malevolence.

Lady Emyralda stepped back and spontaneously cast a Cure Light Wounds spell on herself and healed 8 damage. The cleric also succeeded at holding of further damage from the demon’s poison. Ro-Mahn stepped over to get flanking with Stabem and skewered the demon with his cold iron rapier for 12 damage. The monster died with a shriek of pain and rage.

After taking a few moments to collect themselves, the party continued their journey to Marcuccio Bravoni’s warehouse (#4 on the Saringallow map).

Barnacleez worked his way back around the corner and proceeded cautiously toward the group. The sorcerer was prepared to cast a Magic Missile spell at the first sign of the monster. Ro-Mahn closed ranks with Lady Emyralda and Wahesh. The cleric channeled positive energy and healed 4 damage from herself. The halfling also fought off the lingering effects of the demon’s poison, preventing further damage.

After a few moments, Cando reappeared and joined the group. The fighter asked, “Did you kill it? I do not see a body.” The group filled him in on events while looking around apprehensively. After a few more moments, Ro-Mahn concluded, “Either we chased it off or it is biding its time to strike again.”

As if on cue, the fully healed monster reappeared and attacked Lady Emyralda again. Before it could complete the attack, Ro-Mahn stabbed the demon with his cold iron rapier. The blow landed and dealt 4 damage. Barnacleez fired his magic missile. The spell struck the creature dealing 4 more damage. The now wounded monster finished its attacks on the cleric. Both sets of claws and the bite landed dealing a total of 7 damage. The cleric failed to fight of the new dose of poison and suffered another point of Dexterity damage.

Ro-Mahn stabbed the monster with his cold iron rapier. The attack struck true and dealt 12 damage. Lady Emyralda backed up a step and attacked again with her quarterstaff but the cleric missed the target. The halfling continued to fight the poison coursing through her body, managing to prevent any further ability damage. The monster howled in pain and rage even as its wounds began to close. The creature cast defensively and turned invisible. Afterward, the sounds of its wings flapping could be heard.

Barnacleez and Cando both disappeared from sight as well as they both rounded corners in their flight. Stabem thrust his rapier where the creature had been but the rogue did not make contact. Wahesh swung again with his cold iron morningstar but did not strike anything with his blow either.

Ro-Mahn maneuvered around and stabbed at the monster with his cold iron rapier. The blow landed dealing 3 damage and the creature hissed in anger. Lady Emyralda backed away from the creature and swung with her quarterstaff. The blow landed but bounced harmlessly off of the monster. The winged horror flew forward to attack the cleric. The wound issued by Ro-Mahn quickly closing before the party’s eyes. The halfling swung her weapon again as the creature invaded her space. Again, the weapon connected but did not seem to harm the monster. The demon attacked with its claws and teeth. The first claw missed but the second set and the bite both struck dealing 2 and 3 damage respectively. The cleric felt a burning from the claw attack and also suffered 2 Dexterity damage.

Barnacleez cried, “Oh no! Not again!” and fled back the way the party had come. Cando took off in the other direction. Both moved deliberately away from the monster. Stabem stepped forward and attacked the creature but missed with his rapier. Wahesh stepped up to attack with his cold iron morningstar. The fighter’s swing missed as he was shaking with fear.

Seeing that the Vazarros were in good hands, the party decided to take up Ildris Ruvarra’s offer for rest and shelter. Lady Emyralda did what she could to aid the ailing family. Her efforts greatly improved their physical condition but could do nothing for their state of weakness. The halfling concluded that stronger magic and time were required to correct that problem.

In the morning, the Pathfinders rose rested and ready to continue their investigation. After having a bite to eat, the party was summoned by Father Ildris. The cleric said, “The patients, though weak are now able to talk. I think that you need to hear what they have to say.”

Interviewing Gellion’s parents proved fruitful. Altius and Beldonna revealed that their son has been acting quite oddly lately, consumed by some sort of strange alchemical experiments. They recently heard him ranting about a warehouse, and they saw him heading in the direction of their acquaintance Marcuccio Bravoni’s warehouse with one of his friends, Morvinarr. The tavern-keeper’s apprentice appeared quite drunk, which Altius and Beldonna found unusual. When they went to confront Gellion after a terrible racket in his room, they discovered the spider within, along with a “horrible little blood-stained man.” The rest was pain and suffering.

The Vazarros provide directions to their friend’s warehouse (#4 on the Saringallow map).

As they were about to leave the church to investigate the warehouse, the party was approached by the mayor. She asked for a status update. When told of what had been found, Sandra Trinelli, nodded solemnly and said, “The warehouse seems like a sensible place to resume the search. Given the nature of what you have already encountered, it may be best if we clear the surrounding streets before you head in. I will have the guards come up with some pretext or another. Not to worry.”

With the mayor’s blessing, the Pathfinders left the church and headed toward the warehouse. As they drew near, the party fell victim to a spell. A sense of overwhelming fear spread across the group. A tiny, winged monster with a thin and wiry body and a twisted head with ram horns curling back was in their midst. Barnacleez and Cando were compelled to run from the creature while Ro-Mahn, Lady Emyralda, Wahesh and Stabem were merely shaken by its presence.

After some discussion, the party decided to take the ailing Vazarros to the temple of Erastil for treatment.

Upon arrival, Ildris Ruvarra, took the townsfolk into his care. He made them comfortable and began treating their conditions with mundane remedies. Once the patients were settled, the priest said, “I will pray for to proper spells in the morning that will help restore these poor souls to health. Maybe after they have rested they will be able to tell you what you need. In the meantime, you are welcome to stay and rest and refresh yourselves. Nothing good can come of chasing around in the dark without direction.”

Cando raced into the room with a battle cry. The half-orc slashed the giant spider with one end of his double-axe dealing 12 damage. Wahesh followed on this heels drawing his longsword along the way. The other fighter also struck the monster for 9 damage, killing it. As quickly as the combat started, it was over.

The two bodies entangled in the web turned out to be a human man and woman. Both were covered in spider bites and were barely alive. From their ages, the party assumed that these were Gellion’s parents, Beldonna and Altius Vazarro. Lady Emyralda channeled positive energy to heal the couple and to destroy the Demon Bile. The healing helped the couple, bringing them to consciousness but neither was strong enough to speak or move. The halfling judged that this was likely the effects of the spider’s poison.

A search of the desk that was under the Demon Bile reveled some arrow heads. One was cold iron, one was steel, one was obsidian and the last was stone. There were also some scribbled notes on the desk that read, “Adverse reaction to cold iron. What about magic? Fire? Cold? Further trials are required.”

A small chest was located next to the desk. Stabem and Ro-Mahn examined the vessel. It was not trapped or locked, so it was opened to examine the contents. Within were discovered six flasks of acid, two flasks of alchemist’s fire, two tanglefoot bags and five potions.

Barnacleez went to work on figuring “who” the potions were. The gnome exhaustively examined the vials while dancing, shaking and tasting the contents. Finally he pronounced the following, “This one is name Florence and she is a potion of remove disease. This beauty is Marilyn and she is a potion of lesser restoration. Lastly, these three are Larry, Moe and Curly. They are potions of cure light wounds.”

Gallows of Madness: A Foul Breed - GM Turn Post 30

This small room contains a simple bed, desk, and chair. Thick webs cover the west end of the room, where the bed sits—and two humanoid forms appear trapped within. Sticky, purplish-black strands cling to the desk and chair on the east side of the room, except in one spot where the strange filaments have left a clear space around a small piece of metal.

A man-sized spider skitters from under the bed, clicking its mandibles menacingly.

After searching the storeroom and washroom and not finding anything of interest or value, the party moved on to investigate the door to the north. Ro-Mahn searched the door for traps while Cando and Wahesh stood guard. Barnacleeze cast Detect Magic but did not detect any new magical aura.

Ro-Mahn did not detect any traps and the door was not locked. The rogue carefully opened the door and peered inside. Beyond the door was a large bedroom. The room was a mess featuring upturned furniture and all the decorations were knocked from the shelves and walls. Every painting was smashed from its frame and torn to pieces. Sitting on the otherwise-undisturbed master bed was a single journal.

Examination of the journal revealed that it belonged to Gellion’s mother, Beldonna Vazarro. Its contents were quite mundane—simply a record of the family’s life from day to day—but every page has the message “Our son is an awful disappointment” written over it in blood, in the same childlike handwriting as that was seen on the wall of the washroom. By skimming the journal and concentrating on the most recent entries, Ro-Mahn deduced that Beldonna was concerned about her son’s well-being: he was spending too much time on his experiments, was not eating well, and seemed distant from his friends and parents.

Finding nothing else of interest, the party turned its attention to the southern room. Again, Ro-Mahn examined the door for traps. The rogue declared it trap-free and stepped to the side allowing room for Cando to open the door. The half-orc stepped up and pushed the door open.

Once the party reached the second floor, Lady Emyralda channeled positive energy and completely healed the damage that had previously been inflicted upon the party.

Similarly to the stairs and ground floor, the upstairs hallway was covered in tiny, bloody footprints. Seeing the three door options, the Pathfinders selected the door to their left to explore first. The two rogues took the lead, wary of more traps.

The door was not locked and did not appear trapped. Stabem opened the door and looked within. The shelves in this storeroom had been ripped off the wall and lay heaped upon the floor, along with their now-wrecked former contents—bloody linens, a broken broom, and other ruined household supplies.

In contrast, beyond the storeroom, the tidy washroom appeared oddly untouched by the surrounding messy chaos. Upon entering the washroom, this proved to be untrue. As Stabem and Ro-Mahn entered the room, the mirror fell from the wall and shattered on the floor. This revealed a nasty, scrawled message written in blood with a childlike hand: “You know nothing! You ruined everything! Your friends hate you! I HATE YOU!”

Cando and Wahesh stood guard at the base of the steps while Barnacleez stood nearby the fighters with his crossbow at the ready. Lady Emyralda stood by speaking encouraging words and promising to heal folks once they ventured upstairs. Both the gnome and the halfling cast Detect Magic and scanned the room. Neither noted any new magical auras.

While searching the shelves to the south, Ro-Mahn set off a trap. The miniature, make-shift ballista shot a sharpened fork at the rogue. The missile hit, dealing 3 damage to Ro-Mahn. Afterward, the rogue noticed a pile of similarly prepared forks next to the trap. These were apparently more ammunition for re-loading the device.

Further searching of the room did not yield anything else of interest or value.

The search moved on to the kitchen. Pushing the door open to enter the kitchen sprung another fork trap. This time it was Stabem that was hit. The ballistic fork hit the rogue dealing 4 damage. As before, a pile of prepared forks was stacked nearby.

The smell of rotting food and stagnant water rose from the filth in this small kitchen, mixed sickeningly with the strong, coppery scent of fresh blood. Broken jugs, upturned trays, and scraps of food littered the room. In the sink, a large bowl filled with chewed and spatout food floated in thick, bloody water within the sink. An open door to the south revealed a ransacked pantry.

While the smell from the sink was revolting, neither Ro-Mahn nor Stabem suffered any ill effects from exposure. Nothing of value or interest was discovered.

The party proceeded to climb the stairs to the 2nd level of the house.

Lady Emyralda stepped back and targeted the monster with a fire bolt but the ray missed the mark. Wahesh turned and moved to the cleric’s aid. The fighter struck the creature with his new morningstar dealing 10 damage. There was a sickening crunch but the creature did not cry out. Ro-Mahn moved up to flank with the fighter and stab the creature. The rouge’s attack missed. Cando also joined the fight, missing with both ends of his double-axe.

The homunculus leaped upon Wahesh and bit the fighter with its out of proportion teeth. The bite struck flesh dealing 3 damage. The monster used its small size to seek cover between the fighter’s legs. Barnacleez let loose with a crossbow bolt but missed the monster. Stabem moved behind the fighter and attacked the creature but missed with a thrust from his rapier.

The party entered the house and spread out to investigate. Lady Emyralda cast a Guidance spell on Ro-Mahn as the rogue headed toward the fireplace. The cleric moved toward the table. Cando and Barnacleez moved toward the stairs while Wahesh and Stabem moved toward the kitchen.

The fireplace was filled with paintings, bed linens and keepsakes such as wooden toys. The kitchen appeared to be a wreck based on the view through the partially opened door. A foul odor wafted from the room. The bloody footprints covering the stairs were unusually small, as if a baby had scampered up and down them several times but without using its hands.

Lady Emyralda gave a shout of pain as a small kitchen knife embedded into her foot dealing 2 damage.

A small, vaguely human-shaped creature was seen moving under the table. Barnacleez recognized it as some sort of homunculus. It lacked the wings and stinger and had more bulk and larger teeth than are typical for the creation.

(Looks something like this but covered in blood and armed with several small knives.)
