Ronan moved forward and engaged the nearest orc but the two-handed attack with his scimitar missed the mark. Jerry moved forward and attacked the far orc with his wakizashi. The blow landed and dealt 4 damage.

Holytrauma stepped forward and attacked the nearest orc with his battle axe.  The blow landed dealing 10 damage. Though greviously wounded, the monster roared with rage and continued to fight. Fergus rushed forward and attacked the same monster with a ferosious strike but the cleric missed the mark.
The wounded orc struck at Holytrauma with his greataxe but missed the paladin. The far orc attacked Jerry. The monster’s greataxe struck the ninja and dealt 9 damage.

Korg moved forward and targeted the nearest brute with a magic missile. The spell dealt 5 damage more to the raging orc but it remained standing. The last orc stepped forward and attacked Ronan. The greataxe landed and dealt 16 damage and dropped the magus.
Holytrauma was puzzled by the orcs. Something did not seem right about the monsters and he believed them to be false phantasms.

After about 2 hours of travel, the party encountered an obstacle.

The narrow path winds through the raking claws of the trees, now bereft of their leaves, which crunch loudly underfoot. Up ahead, a fallen tree trunk blocks the path. Suddenly a trio of snarling humanoids leaps up from behind the log, all greenish skin and fearsome tusks, bellowing vulgar challenges.

Crypt of the Everflame GM Turn Post 2

The ritual is set to begin at noon on the 4th. The party arrives at the town square at the appointed time and discover it to be empty except for themselves.

The bells atop the Temple of Erastil toll their midday song, echoing throughout the quiet town of Kassen. As the peals begin to fade, the first of the townsfolk make their way into the square, dressed in black, as if attending a funeral. They slowly fill the square, moving quietly across the cold, hard ground, their eyes downcast and mournful. After a few moments, a murmur passes through the crowd as it slowly parts to let Mayor Uptal through. He leads the way with a tarnished silver lantern. Behind him, an old pony drags a cart laden with backpacks and supplies.

Once he reaches the center of the crowd, Mayor Uptal stops and calls out to the assembled townsfolk. “Once again the winter winds blow through the Fangwood, marking the end of another harvest. There are wolves in the woods, howling at our walls, and serpents in our shadows, waiting to strike. Just as it was one hundred and seventy-four years ago, when Kassen himself left these walls to protect us, so it is today. Where are the heroes? Where are the brave folk that will venture out to Kassen’s tomb and retrieve the flame to keep this community safe for another winter?”

At this point the Pathfinders are motioned forward. The mayor hands the silver lantern to Holytrauma and instructs, “Use this to bring back the fire to Kassen.”

The mayor then hands each of you a backpack that contains 5 days’ worth of rations, a small tent, a winter blanket and a full waterskin.  In addition, the following items are spread out among the backpacks, distributed as evenly as possible: 50 feet of hempen rope, a box containing tinder and three tindertwigs, a labeled potion of cure light wounds, three torches, a grappling hook, and a small bottle of local brandy. The mayor also provides a trail map.

The mayor once again speaks to the townsfolk. “I present to you the brave heroes who will follow in Kassen’s footsteps to retrieve the Everflame! Some of them may not return, but I say to you that their sacrifice shall not be forgotten. Go, brave heroes, and do not return until you have the eternal fire.” With that, the mayor points to the south, the direction of Kassen’s tomb. The townsfolk begin waving goodbye with cold, solemn looks on most of their faces.

What do you do now?

Would like to proceed

Can we get this one rolling too? I am ok with whatever pace we proceed but it needs to start moving to have any fun at all.

I know that this is a busy time of year. I personally have a bunch of stuff going on but I should be able to get things moving at a reasonable pace.

I am still looking for a copy of the updated Korg.

Crypt of the Everflame Turn Results 1

Your travel to the Hamlet of Kassen is uneventful. You are easily able to locate the Seven Silvers Inn and meet with Cygar.

See the Hamlet of Kassen tab for a map and more information about the settlement.

You have a few days to explore the villaige and get to know some of the townsfolk if you like.

If not, we can get right to the ceremony.

Crypt of the Everflame GM Turn Post 1

You are contacted by a fellow Pathfinder, Cygar, asking that you travel to the Hamlet of Kassen in Nirmathas. He asks that you participate in a local ritual and record your experience as it might be of interest to other Pathfinders and could prove worthy of mention within a volume of the Pathfinder Chronicles.

Cygar’s letter goes on to explain some history of the ceremony.

In honor of their beloved founder, the townsfolk buried Kassen in the ancient crypt, interring his bones in a place of honor. They placed an eternal flame above Kassen’s final resting place, so that all who visited might find warmth in the wilderness.

Every autumn, a few of the townsfolk make a pilgrimage to the Crypt of the Everflame to light a lantern from the flame and bring it back to town, where it is preserved all winter, a symbol of the town’s resilience. Most years, the town mayor and a group of dignitaries perform this quest. Every few years, however, a handful of younger townsfolk are given the honor of lighting the lantern. Many see this as a passage into adulthood, a taste of adventure before settling down to work and marriage. The quest starts out as a solemn ceremony in town, where the townsfolk gather to wish the adventurers luck, just as it was when Kassen himself left to fight the mercenaries. When the adventurers return a few days later, the town holds a great celebration in their honor. This also marks the final harvest celebration before the long winter.

Cygar states that it has been a few years since a group of youngsters have participated in the ceremony and it will likely be a few more before another group is ready. Cygar has spoken with Mayor Uptal and he has agreed to allow you to act as surrogates and take on this year’s pilgrimage.

If you are interested, you should seek him out at the Seven Silvers Inn in Kassen before 4th of Neth.

Do you accept the invitation?

What's Next?

I think I am leaning toward running Crypt of the Everflame. It will require a bit of modification to the story but nothing major to get you involved. I expect that this adventure will take about a year to play in our PBB format.

If anyone wants to switch their character, now is the time to do so. You will need a 1st or 2nd level PFS character to play. The adventure is designed for characters to level up during the adventure but with PFS play, that is not possible. You will earn enough XP to level after the adventure is complete.

If anyone knows a 6th person that would be interested and relied upon to play, now is the time for them to get onboard.

I would like to get this rolling soon. Chronicles were sent out or will be hand delivered today. Please send me you character updates as soon as you can.

Bookkeeping/Next Adventure

I have reported the scenario as completed.

I need to know how much GP each character had to start this adventure. I need to record purchases and the cost of boat passage on the appropriate chronicle sheets. I have Ronan purchasing a healer’s kit and 3 antiplague and Jerry purchasing an antiplague. Did I miss anything else? The passage to Escadar was 25 GP. Bruce said that Jerry would pay the difference if anyone did not have their 5 GP share of the cost.

I will send out chronicles later today or hand them out in person tomorrow to the guys I will see.

Once you have leveled/updated your characters, please send me an updated PDF copy so that I can post them to my site and link them to the blog page.

Do not forget to complete your Inventory Track Sheets. (check out the links at http://tuesdaygame.blogspot.com/2013/08/new-pfs-inventory-track-sheet.html)

What do you want to play next? Assuming that you want to play the same characters, I have three tier 1-2 modules – Crypt of the Everflame (Bruce, Matt H and Matt F have played but not for PFS credit), Godsmouth Heresy (Bruce, Dave and Steve have played for PFS credit but it is replayable) or Murder’s Mark. I also have 3 tier 1-5 scenarios that none of you have played. The first one is Shades of Ice - Part I: Written in Blood. Which route would you like to go?

A Vision of Betrayal Turn Results 30

Nester continued to secure the Pathfinder Society artifact. The bartender attempted to flee toward the doors to her right. Fergus stabbed at her with his rapier and scored a telling blow dealing 8 damage, dropping the wizard.

Upon examining the wizard, the first detail discovered is that she was a gillman too. A search of her body, revealed several magic items (a potion, a scroll, a wand and a cloak), a gem, some money and a letter. The letter was handwritten and addressed her superior in the Aspis Consortium. The contents outlined the gillmen’s plans for tricking the Pathfinders and trading a fake artifact for the real thing, It was written in the past tense, as if she planned to send it immediately after the con was completed.

The other two gillmen did not have anything of interest or value.

The gillmen’s letter also revealed that the Aspis Consortium’s plan never involved stopping naval transport of the relic. The party may return to Absalom by boat without worry.

On the journey home, Fergus treats himself, Ronan and Korg for their sickness. The cleric and magus recovered the next day. The sorcerer suffered the effects for 4 days before the symptoms cleared. This process consumed 8 of the 10 uses of Ronan’s healer’s kit.

Upon  the party’s return to Absalom, Venture-Captain Dreng thanked you for your efforts and apologized for sending you on a fool’s errand, but commended you for uncovering the ruse and preventing the Society’s enemies from gaining control of a true Azlanti artifact.

Need to be done by Monday

We need to be done and reported by Monday but I think there is only a turn or so left. So a final push to get it done would be appreciated.

When the combat is over we will need to clear up some bookkeeping issues. Those who are diseased, Fergus, Ronan and Korg, will need to make their saves and resolve the affliction. I need to know if you are doing anything special other than just your saving throws.

I assume that everyone is going to stick with their current faction? Here is what I have:

Jerry - Sczarni
Fergus - Andoran
Korg - Grand Lodge
Ronan - Qadira
Holytrauma - Silver Crusade

If you wish to choose a different one, you can. I would just adjust your reported factions from the previous scenarios. Technically, since you have not played at 2nd level yet, everyone can respect if you want/need to.

I will send chronicles and a message from your "new" faction head when we finish.

Nester attempted to grab the greased artifact again and this time he succeeded.

The bartender attempted to cast a spell on the defensive but could not manage to get it off. She stepped back. Fergus attacked the enemy with his rapier but missed while shouting “ACH! Hold still ye treacherous trollop!” The cleric maneuvered behind her to potentially provide flanking to one of his friends.
With his vision cleared, Jerry moved forward to join the fight. The ninja moved into the space previously occupied by the bartender but was unable to attack. Seeing the artifact was in hand, Korg moved so that he had a line of sight on the enemy and cast acid splash. The spell hit and dealt 2 damage. Holytrauma moved forward and swung his battleaxe. The blow landed dealing 4 damage. Ronan stepped forward and attacked but missed with a two-handed swing from his scimitar.

Fergus maneuvered behind the bartender, threatening her with his weapon as he channeled positive energy to heal 4 damage from Holytrauma and Korg. Jerry maintained his position and waited for his vision to clear. Korg moved toward Nester to protect the scholar and the artifact.

Holytrauma stepped forward and attacked the bartender with his battleaxe. His attack struck true dealing 8 damage. Ronan charged his scimitar from his arcane pool and stepped to melee with the bartender. The two-handed stroke from his scimitar landed a blow dealing 7 damage.

Nester blinked as his vision cleared. The scholar looked around and surveyed the scene. The bartender targeted the artifact in Nester’s hands with a grease spell. The item slipped from Nester’s grasp and skidded to the floor. The bartender vaulted the bar and headed around the aquarium to the right. Nester tried to pick up the item but failed.

Fergus cast a longstrider spell upon himself and waited for his vision to clear. Jerry headed toward the bar swinging his katana but his target was no longer there. Korg moved forward and shouted after the bartender. The sorcerer cast an acid splash spell at the villain. The spell hit dealing 3 damage.

Holytrauma gave chase and caught up with the bartender. Ronan blinked and shook his head as his vision cleared.

Nester attempted to flee from the gillman and backed into the webbing. Remarkably the scholar remained unentangled and gained concealment from his attacker. With a shout of frustration, the bartender dismissed her web spell so that Nestor could again be seen.

Freed of the webbing, Fergus stumbled forward and collided with the table in front of him. Jerry stepped toward the sounds of the nearby gillman. The ninja swung his katana and managed to strike his foe dealing 6 damage.

Korg stepped back and targeted his gillman assailant with an acid splash. The spell hit the mark and dealt 3 damage to the bodyguard and knocked her unconscious. Holytrauma, freed to move, advanced on the remaining gillman. The paladin struck true with his battleaxe and dealt 4 damage. The stricken gillman was felled by the attack.

Ronan moved forward along the edge of the aquarium toward the bar.

With the flash of the blinding light and the shouting from Korg, Nester reached forward and tried to regain possession of the artifact. The negotiator was able to sweep up the item and blindly stagger back from the table.

The bartender cast a web spell catching the entire party except Nester. Fergus attempted to cast a bless spell but his casting was disturbed by the webbing and he lost the spell. Jerry fumbled forward and out of the webbing. The ninja attacked the gillman who was seated opposite. The attack missed the mark due to blindness and surprise.

Korg shouted, “The bartender is a sorcerer in league with the gillmen to rob us - she's blinded most of us! Mind your valuables and hold your ground!” The sorcerer moved out of the webbing past Nester and toward the door that the party entered. The half-orc cast a magic missile at the closest gillman dealing 4 damage to the female bodyguard.

Holytrauma stepped forward trying to escape the webbing but became ensnared instead. The gillman seated at the table got up and moved to Nester. The villain tried to grapple the blinded scholar but failed to get him in his grasp. Ronan cast a shield spell upon himself. The remaining gillman moved toward Korg and attacked the sorcerer. The gillman’s spear struck home dealing 5 damage.

The gillman placed his artifact upon the table and waited eagerly to see the one carried by the party. Korg and Fergus gathered closer as Nester produced his burden. Based upon the body language of the gillmen, Fergus got a nervous feeling. Korg started to assist with the negotiations when he noticed that some details of the gillmen’s artifact seemed a bit off. The sorcerer started to question the artifact’s authenticity when the sound of a broken glass was heard from behind the bar.

Both gillmen closed their eyes as the flame from the candle on the table exploded in a burst of spectacular fireworks. Jerry, Fergus, Ronan and Nester were all blinded by the sudden flash. Afterward a wisp of smoke trailed from the candle’s wick; the flame extinguished.

After about 30 minutes, a beer and some dinner, the gillmen that the party was expecting arrived. The gillman contingent consisted of only two Low Azlanti, a man and a woman. The male carried a delicately wrapped bundle of cloth while the woman acted as bodyguard.

The gillmen greeted the party and the man carrying the bundle introduced himself as Shoalo; the other, a muscular female gillman was named Ahrmisa. She remained silent and stoic. Shoalo sat at a table and placed his package before you. He offered the seats opposite him to Nester Rees and Jerry. Ahrmisa stood behind him during this process and eyed the rest of the party suspiciously.
Shoalo invited the party to place their item on the table for inspection and he offered his as well.

A Vision of Betrayal GM Turn Post 22

The sounds of a busy tavern echo off the wooden walls of this unusual building. Resting precariously over Escadar’s harbor, the Grindylow’s Goblet offers an unequaled view of the water. In the bar’s center, a thick glass aquarium presents a striking display. Within the tank, a coral statue of a goblin with the lower body of an octopus hosts a school of colorful fish that flit about the nooks and crannies of its tentacles.

The Grindylow’s Goblet is a busy tavern that offers entertainment and drink to those visiting Escadar. Thick wooden planks support the tavern floor as it stretches out into the harbor, offering a splendid vista of Escadar’s harbor. Wooden walls and doors make up the tavern’s construction, and several torches fill sconces that cast the tavern in normal illumination. At the tavern’s heart rests a 15-foot-by-15-foot aquarium crafted from alchemically strengthened glass and full of clear water. The bottom of the aquarium is also made of glass, and offers a view of the harbor waters, which are 10 feet below the glass bottom at the current tide.

Two human servers busily provide food and drink to the tavern’s half-dozen patrons, and a striking woman tends the bar.

Jerry agreed to the captain’s terms and paid Tanner his fee of 25 GP.

To start the next day, Fergus and Ronan drank their antiplagues and the cleric tended to their symptoms. Neither appeared to suffer any further effects. Korg was not as lucky. The sorcerer came down with the same muzzy-headed symptoms, taking 1 WIS damage, signifying that he too was infected .with the same disease.

Crazy Old Tanner, true to his word was ready to sail at the morning tide. The 24 mile trip was uneventful but took most of the day before the captain safely delivered the party to Escadar. It was around dinner time when the party arrived. Upon arrival, Nestor sends word to the Gillman embassy that the Pathfinders have arrived. He then directs the party to a waterside tavern called the Grindylow’s Goblet.

A Vision of Betrayal Turn Results 20

Ronan and Jerry went shopping to procure some healing supplies. The magus acquired 3 antiplague and a healer’s kit to treat himself and Fergus in the morning. The ninja got himself an antiplague as well; just in case.

Once the shopping was completed, the party decided to approach Crazy Old Tanner to see about passage to Escadar. The captain was a disheveled, fish-smelling, and wild-eyed man who constantly talked out the side of his mouth while blowing thick gouts of grey smoke from an aromatic pipe. He was fit to yelling at the sea, accusing it of being an unfaithful mistress and talking about how things were better when he was much younger.

His starting price for passage was 35 GP. Jerry, with some help from the rest of the party, was able to negotiate with the salty seaman and got the price down to 25 GP. When the captain was done negotiating he said, “25 gold is my final price. Take it or leave it. I sail with the morning tide.”

Time To Get The Game Moving Again.

I will be posting the turn 20 results and next turn tomorrow. We have until 9/30/13 to get this completed. This should be accomplished as long as everyone does their part.

We have an extention to complete

I have confirmed that this scenario will be retired on 8/14/13. There is an extension for online games. We must be completed by 9/30/13.

I do not believe that we will have any trouble completing the scenario by then. I appoligize for my lack of diligence on progressing the adventure as I have been fairly busy with work and preparing for Gen Con. That said, I will try to get in a few posts prior to Gen Con but that may not happen.

We need to get this done by 8/14/13

We are getting close to the deadline where the First Steps scenarios will be retired. We need to finish up by 8/14/13. We are very close but I need players to participate to get to the end.

Currently I am looking for direction on what the party will do next.

Two items are outstanding:

1) What characters plan to buy to treat the apparent disease. Bruce has said he will buy an antiplague. Matt F has inquired about antiplague and a healer's kit but I am not sure he has commited.

2) Which captain the party will approach to book passage to Escadar. Also, who plans to do the talking?

A Vision of Betrayal Turn Results 19

The investigations by Jerry and Korg determined that there are three captains able to transport the party to Escadar; Darice Sumore, a female human, Small Otti, a male halfling, and Crazy Old Tanner, an old male human.

Jerry was further able to determine the following pieces of information:

 - Darice never knew her father, and many villagers whisper that he was a member of the Pathfinder Society.

 - Small Otti values his coin, for he has many mouths to feed—most importantly, his own.

 - Tanner’s skill at sea is unmatched, but so is his lunacy; take a boat ride with him and you might ride straight into a squall.

Korg was further able to determine the following pieces of information:

 - Darice resents never knowing her father and some say she longingly caresses the trinket he left behind for her.

 - Small Otti has a weakness for fine food and drink, and any deal with him is made sweeter if food is involved.

 - Some whisper that Tanner is not actually crazy, but no one is brave enough to find out.

A Vision of Betrayal GM Turn Post 19

The travel the next day proves to relatively easy, allowing the party to travel 15 mile by mid-day. It is almost lunch time as the group enters the village of Pier’s End.

The sleepy fishing village of Pier’s End offers a warm inn and a hot meal. It is here that the party is supposed to arrange passage to the Isle of Erran and the port of Escadar.

Goods and services 500 GP or less can be purchased as well as 1st level spellcasting. What do you do next?

Searching the body of the Bog mother uncovers a wand of cure light wounds, a club and 8 amethysts worth 150 GP in total.  Searching inside the hollow log uncovers, a pile of leaves which acts as a bed, and a long wooden shelf lining the eastern wall filled with all sorts of potted mushrooms.

The only thing that is found that may constitute “babies” is the small patch of thistles growing in haphazard rows north of the log.

Due to the lateness in the day, the party decided to rest near the log house for the night.

The morning finds Ronan feeling more addled and Fergus reports similar complaints. Both feel as if their heads are in a fog.

Korg struggled forward trying to escape the ensnaring plants all around him. Jerry stepped up and attacked the Bog Mother with both of his weapons but missed the kobold with both.

The Bog Mother attacked Jerry with her club. The attacked missed the nimble ninja as the kobold continued to shout threats at the party. “You will pay for threatening my babies!”

Ronan escaped the entangle and stepped behind Jerry. The magus attacked the Bog Mother, striking the kobold with his scimitar for 6 damage. Holytrauma exited the area of entanglement to stand behind Ronan. Fergus maneuvered into a flanking position with Jerry and attacked the kobold with a ferocious strike. The blow landed and dealt 6 damage which dropped the kobold.

Korg moved forward and cast Acid Splash targeting the alligator. The spell missed the mark due to cover and trying to target the creature while it combated with Jerry. Jerry attacked again with his swords. The katana struck a blow dealing 9 damage.

The Bog Mother scampered over the large log and dropped in front of Jerry. The kobold swag her club at the ninja but she missed the mark. Korg became ensnared in the foliage. Snap Jaw bit at Jerry but again missed the ninja.

Ronan struggled forward through the magical foliage. Holytrauma struggled forward as well but the paladin was able to swing his battleaxe and landed a blow on Snap Jaw. The weapon dealt 11 damage and killed the alligator.

Fergus vaulted to the top of the log and maneuvered to attack the Bog Mother but the cleric’s blow missed the kobold.

The Future (Near and Far)

I am trying to get this scenario completed by Gen Con as it is expected to be retired at that time. I think we can make it as long as folks post on a timely basis. We have 5 1/2 weeks and 2 1/2 encounters left to go.

Thinking ahead, what would you like to do next? Would you like to continue to play a PFS scenario?

Assuming you do, we will have four 2nd level characters and one 1st level. I could run a tier 1-2 module. I have three, all of which can be replayed. Bruce, Dave and Steve have played Godsmouth Heresy for PFS credit with 1st level guys. Matt H, Bruce and possibly Matt F have played Crypt of the Everflame but not for PFS credit. None of you have played Murder's Mark. As they are also replayable, we could also target Master of the Fallen Fortress (Matt F, Dave and Bruce have played) or We Be Goblins (Bruce has run and Matt H, Dave and Steve have played). I have very few other tier 1-5 adventures available that none of the group have played. (More are on the way but it will take some time for them to be published.)

If we wanted to play different characters we could try a tier 3-7 scenario. (I do not have many of these either but again more are on the way.) We can also try a Tier 2-4, a Tier 3-5 or a Tier 4-6 module but that would mean tying up a character for a long time, likely over a year. Not sure that folks want to do that.

All that planning is moot if you guys want to call it quits. Thoughts?
