A5 - The Rope Swing - A pair of knotted ropes are secured above this 15-foot gap. The flag hangs slightly below the bottom of the arcs of the ropes.
A6 - The Dummy Gauntlet - An array of spinning, wooden dummies crowd this 30-foot stretch of the course. The flag is lashed to the central dummy.

The Creature Flag - In addition to the six obstacle flags, a different creature carries a seventh flag every year, wandering the course to harry or hide from competitors. This year’s creature is Skagit, the bat familiar of one of the event organizers.

Ro-Mahn left Stabem to fend for himself against Skagit. He moved across the peninsula and the surface of the water toward the Rope Swing obstacle and began to climb up the cliff face. Stabem swatted at the bat and made a grab for the flag it carried. To the surprise of both the bat and the halfling, the rogue ended up with the flag in his hand and managed to hold onto the cliff face. Stabem tucked the flag in his belt in preparation for more climbing.

Barnacleez races across the surface of the water. Cando grabbed the flag and continued to swim toward the other side. Lady Emyralda followed after Ro-Mahn and the Rope Swing obstacle.

Gerherd moved to the cliff below Stabem and tried to steal the flag from the halfling. Stabem barely fended off the dwarf and retained the flag. Having lost the flag, Skagit abandoned Stabem and moved on to hassle Ro-Mahn. The familiar took its position and fluttered in the face of the ranger/rogue. Hetty and Gazebelle remained invisible and undetected.

Wahesh swam to the dry land of the other peninsula.

Mavin attempted to climb out of the patch of grease but again was unable to find secure purchase even with her oddly long arms. Erna swam to the cliff face and began climbing again with incredible speed. The dwarf made it to the opposite peninsula.

Lou G’Boo nimbly hopped the steps and grabbed the Stump Walk flag.

Targrenon deftly and acrobatically maneuvered through the Dummy Gauntlet and retrieved the flag.

Ro-Mahn tried to steal the flag from Skagit, the Bat, but the wily familiar managed to stay out of his grasp. Stabem tried to grab the bat but also missed gaining ahold of the creature. The halfling did maintain his grip amidst the wing buffeting.

Barnacleez climbed sputtering from of the water and drew a scroll. The gnome cast a Grease spell on the cliff face where Erna Stoneheart and Mavin Marbeket were climbing. The gnome maintained her hold but the dwarf plunged into the water below.

Cando swam down toward the flag and covering the remaining distance. Lady Emyralda cast a Water Walk spell and stepped between Ro-Mahn and Barnacleez, touching her friends and bestowing the spell’s benefits.

Gerherd Roderson stepped back and defensively cast an Obscuring Mist spell which covered most of the peninsula. Skagit continued to harry Stabem. Hetty Skree and Gazebelle the Green remained unseen.

Wahesh pressed forward, swimming past Cando, since the coast appeared clear of opposition.

Mavin Marbeket attempted to use her magical climbing ability to traverse the greasy patch. The gnome tried to make progress but it was all that she could do to hang on. Erna Stoneheart sputtered in the water trying to keep her head above the water and grab the cliff wall for stability.

Lou G’Boo jump off of the cliff and scampered up the first six “steps”.

Targrenon Raedad continued to climb the cliff vertically, avoiding the grease and emerged from the mist near the start of the Dummy Gauntlet.

The starting whistle sounded and most of the party got a jump on the competition.

Ro-Mahn moved close to the Skagit, the Bat, and attempted to bargain with the beast. "Oh, clever Skagit? May I have that bauble please?" The bat stared back with intelligent eyes, maybe not understanding the words but seeming to hear the human’s body language. Despite this, the familiar kept its distance and held onto the flag.

Looking ahead, left and right, Stabem made a direct path to the inner cliff wall and began to climb along its vertical surface. Barnacleez cast Bull’s Strength upon himself and moved forward to the water’s edge. He took a deep breath and jumped in the water. The gnome sunk like a stone. Cando gave a roar of triumph and charged to the water’s edge. The half-orc made a 15-foot long jump into the water and began swimming downward to the submerged flag. Lady Emyralda cast a Bless spell and moved to the water’s edge.

Gerherd Roderson plodded forward across the starting line. He stopped in front Mavin Marbeket and defensively cast a Cat’s Grace spell upon Targrenon Raedad. Skagit, the Bat, moved to Stabem and flapped its wings in the halfling’s face causing a great distraction for the rogue. Hetty Skree drank a potion and vanished from sight. Gazebelle the Green, also drank a potion and disappeared as well.

Recovering from his hamming it up for the crowd, Wahesh ran forward, took a deep breath and jumped in the water, swimming under the surface toward Cando and the submerged flag.

Mavin Marbeket drank a potion and began climbing the cliff wall. The gnome quickly moved past the distracted Stabem. Erna Stoneheart moved to the cliff face and began to climb the surface horizontally. The dwarf moved with unusual speed and proficiency and quickly passed both the halfling and the gnome.

Lou G’Boo followed his pre-contest instructions and headed toward the cliff face as well. The monkey scaled the rocky face with some effort and crossed most of the gap and took the lead.

Like many others, Targrenon Raedad moved to the cliff and began to climb across the gap.

The festival grounds begin to thin out as most attendees line up along the rope barrier surrounding the city reservoir. An angry-looking spur of granite pokes up from the water, carved into a spiraling obstacle course marked with poles, logs, and ropes. The crowd bursts into cheers as the other semifinalist team and defending champions, the Davarn Chokers, approach the starting line. Their dwarven leader, Erna Stoneheart, waves to the crowd as they shout her name. Her teammates follow suit, waving and smiling as the chant of “Chokers! Chokers!” rises above the general cheering.

The course is outfitted with climbing nets and towers, balance beams, swinging ropes over the river, and red flags. A large bat familiar hangs lazily from a perch near the starting line, clutching an additional red silk flag.

DtBP: Firebrand’s Redoubt – Turn Results 1

After about a week in town, the Spring Muddle began. Your team did well in the preliminaries and made it to the final round, facing off against last year's champions, the Davarn Chokers.

The Davarn Chokers:

  • Erna Stoneheart – Female dwarf, guard captain
  • Gerherd Roderson – Male dwarf, acolyte and smith at the temple of Torag
  • Mavin Marbeket – Female gnome, sorcerer
  • Targrenon Raedad – Male human, scoundrel
  • Hetty Skree – Female human, surveyor in Redin’s Mine
  • Gazebelle the Green – Female gnome, paladin of the church of Erastil.
The Rules for Spinebreaker Mountain:

Participants line up on the southwestern landing, and six obstacles block the way, each with its own red flag. Teams score points by getting as many members as possible to the peak and by capturing flags. Each flag is worth 10 points, and each team member to reach the peak is worth 10 points. The first person over the finish line earns 10 bonus points for her team. The competition ends when all the members of one team reach the peak or are
disqualified.

  • Each member of a team does not need to complete every obstacle but only competitors tackling an obstacle are allowed to reach that obstacle’s flag.
  • Anyone falling into the water may climb out and rejoin the race anywhere they are able, though only the southwest and southeast outcroppings are level with the water.
  • Any use of lethal force immediately disqualifies a competitor. Real weapons may not be carried or used during the race, though wooden practice versions of weapons that deal nonlethal damage are permitted as are any weapons that deal nonlethal damage. Knocking an opponent unconscious is legal, but it’s considered poor sportsmanship, and unconscious team members do not need to reach the peak to end the competition.
  • The use of magic is acceptable, so long as that magic aids or enhances competitors’ abilities, rather than circumvents the challenges. A competitor may transform herself into a monkey to better handle some of the obstacles, for example, but could not simply teleport to the peak. Any form of teleportation or flight immediately disqualifies a competitor.
  • Competitors may steal flags from the opposing team using disarm and steal combat maneuvers, or simply claim them from unconscious competitors as a move action.
  • Participants must stay on the mountain or within 15 feet of it if they fall into the reservoir below.

DtBP: Firebrand’s Redoubt - GM Turn Post 1

After your time in Saringallow, you have recently arrived in the dwarven trading town of Davarn in the Five Kings Mountains. The town hosts its Spring Festival every year to celebrate the spring thaw that opens the mountain passes into Druma and Andoran. The highlight of every Spring Festival is the Spring Muddle, where dozens of teams composed of everyone from children to professional athletes compete in challenges of combat, skill, and speed. It all culminates in a final trial, affectionately called Spinebreaker Mountain.

You have arrived with the first outside trade caravan and your employer and the receiver of the transported goods, Lukher Stinnison, a young dwarven merchant, has sponsored your entry as a team in the Spring Muddle tournament as a bonus. He explains that the winning and the second place finishing teams of the competition's obstacle course each win a cash prize and some magic items. The purse is jointly sponsored by the town guards and the temple of Torag.

When the winter’s cold releases the Five Kings Mountains and the spring rains wash away the snows that blanket the area, the residents of Davarn celebrate the return of songbirds and trade caravans with their annual Spring Festival. The event occurs a full week after the spring equinox to celebrate Davarn’s official reopening along trade routes to Druma, Isger, and Andoran. While some caravans arrive earlier, the town sends out engineering teams before the event to clear and repair any road damage caused during the winter months. Colorful banners decorate the public square surrounding the city reservoir, and the surface doors are thrown wide to flush out the stagnant winter air and replace it with mountain breezes and the smell of freshly baked pies and roasted meats. Traveling performers set up their stages to entertain the young and old alike with puppet shows, music, and death-defying stunts. Davarn’s residents build temporary stalls to display their finest handicrafts, worked metals, and raw materials mined deeper in the cave systems beyond the town.

You are free to enjoy the festival and explore the town. The town has a normal population of just over 2,000 but this number swells during the Festival.

  1. Bensik Estate: Davarn’s largest home belongs to the Bensik clan.
  2. Choker’s Run: This tangled neighborhood houses Davarn’s poorest residents.
  3. Davarn Reservoir: The abundant fresh water that pooled in this cave.
  4. Davarn Town Hall: As one of the oldest buildings in Davarn, the town hall bears many of the practical touches of the Torag-influenced design.
  5. Davarn Waterworks: The waterworks are a marvel of engineering that dominates the reservoir’s western shore.
  6. Five Kings Customs House: Davarn’s customs house operates on behalf of both the city and neighboring Taggoret.
  7. The Hall of Torag: serves as a holy gathering place to the town’s many faithful of the Father of Creation.
  8. Kalistrade Library: This temple accommodates Davarn’s small but growing population of devotees to the Prophecies of Kalistrade.
  9. Kardack’s Shaft: Arguably the oldest mine in Davarn.
  10. The Lucky Imp: Davarn’s premier inn, tavern, and dance hall rests near the tunnel that joins upside and downside.
  11. Redin’s Mine and Ironworks: Redin’s Mine is in a steady feud with Kardack’s Shaft over which is the oldest, most productive, and safest mine in Davarn.
  12. Stinnison’s Emporium: Run by local gadfly Lukher, the emporium specializes in “affordable magical solutions,” primarily potions and alchemical goods within the reach of everyday citizens, alongside a few snake oils, folk remedies, and “lucky” baubles to cater to the superstitious.
  13. The Stone of Elders: While most of Davarn’s faith belongs to Torag, the small town honors the remainder of the dwarven pantheon on their respective holy days or when their circumstances beg divine assistance. This large, round temple provides shrines for the nine additional members of the dwarven pantheon, and its circular shape theoretically means no one god is prioritized above the others.
  14. The Tipsy Scales: The largest gambling hall in Davarn, which caters more to travelers than residents.

Bookkeeping

To complete the chronicles, I will need the following:
  • Day Job roll
  • Decision on the bonus chronicle - Are you taking the XP and Gold (and gaining another level) or just the 2PP and boons? I assume that everyone wants to extra level but you might not.

Once the chronicles are completed, I will get them to you as soon as I can. Below are copies of the blank chronicles.

We can start the next adventure once I have the updated character sheets. Please send me PDFs of your Hero Lab sheets so that I can link them to the site. Similar to this adventure, the next is broken into 3 parts. There are chronicles for each part plus a bonus chronicle. The first part can accommodate 4th to 6th level characters. I assume that we are proceeding with the same guys but if anyone wants to play a different CORE character of the appropriate level you may.

Notes: The cure light wounds wands from the Temple of Erastil (original chronicle) will each gain 6 charges. You can purchase a single potion from Pricknettle’s Potions and Poultices at a 30% discount (original chronicle).

GoM: The Festering Blot - Turn Results 51

Ro-Mahn stabbed the newly revealed demon with his cold iron rapier. The flanking attack hit and dealt 9 damage. Stabem moved up the stairs toward Barnacleez but stopped to stay behind Cando.

Barnacleez cast Magic Missile again. The arcane bolts hit the demon and managed to overcome its spell resistance. The spell dealt 8 damage. Lady Emyralda channeled positive energy again and healed 8 damage from Ro-Mahn, Wahesh and Stabem.

Wahesh attacked the demon with his cold iron swords. The monster avoided the short sword but the longsword landed a blow. The weapon bit deeply into the worm demon’s flesh and dealt 9 damage. Wormgnash stopped laughing and collapsed to the floor. Unlike the dretches, the demon remained on the floor oozing ichor and breathing shallowly.

Cando strode forward to enter the room. As he went he kicked the body and finished off the dying demon with a blow from his axe.

The party began to search the room in earnest.

On the table, you find drawings and diagrams of some sort of portal, showing a worm-demon stepping through what looks very much like the sacrificial pit in the adjacent room. The notes—written in Abyssal—suggest that the author believed he was very close to a breakthrough that would have ripped a tiny interdimensional hole here that would have allowed several of his vermlek brethren to join him on the Material Plane. You also find a rough map of Saringallow with arrows and drawings of mites scribbled on it. It indicates that the fiendish fey were soon to attack the town in order to obtain bodies for the vermleks to inhabit.

There are six cabinets in the room, each full of documents. The shelves are neatly labeled, and you easily find the missing records in the cabinet in the northeast corner of the room.

As you gather the documents, tremors start to ripple through the basement and the house begins to crumble. You make a mad dash to escape and manage to retreat outside after a few tense rounds with only a few bumps and bruises.

Returning to Saringallow, Mayor Trinelli congratulates you for your bravery and resourcefulness and pays you for the records, as agreed. When the mayor issues a report about the your findings, people start lining up in front the town hall, curious to know what happened to their kin so long ago. Over the next several days, you meet with the grateful people whose families are mentioned in the records. Many tearful townspeople also seek you out to meet and thank you.

This concludes The Gallows of Madness.

Ro-Mahn moved past the demon with little regard. The monster swiped at him with a claw but missed. The ranger/rogue acrobatically tumbled through the doorway and managed to get behind the man. Coming up from his crouch, Ro-Mahn lashed out with his rapier and landed a blow that dealt 7 damage. Stabem waited patiently behind Cando and promised healing.

Barnacleez cast Magic Missile again. The spell struck home this time and dealt 6 damage. Lady Emyralda channeled positive energy, healing 9 damage from Stabem and restoring Cando, Wahesh and herself to full health.

Inspired by Ro-Mahn’s success. Wahesh stepped forward also attempted to tumble past the man in the doorway. The fighter was not as skilled and failed to win past but was deft enough to dodge Wormgnash’s incoming rapier blade. The fighter retorted, "Wormgnash, you might have plans for our remains but until then I got a bone to pick with you. Take my advice: surrender now -- you'll save yourself a lot of time dead." He then swung his cold iron longsword and hit the man for 10 damage.

Wormgnash turned to face Ro-Mahn with his own raper. He feinted high and struck low and dealt 8 damage. He followed the initial attack by biting for another 2 damage.

Despite his grievous injuries, the mustached man was still grinning. “You think that is enough to stop me? You have to—” He stoped mid-sentence as his obese form shuddered. With a ripping sound, his flesh peeled off, revealing a fatheaded man-sized worm, which uttered in a gurgling voice, “Try harder.”

The dretch turned upon the Wahesh, striking with a claw for 5 damage and sinking its teeth in deep for 6 damage.

Unable to reach the thing in the doorway, Cando turned his attention to the demon in front of him. The half-orc concluded his song and in silence charged his axe with arcane energy. The first stroke missed the target but the second axe head hit and dealt 5 damage. This was enough to send the monster back to the Abyss in a snarling rage.

Going on Vacation

I will be on vacation for just over a week starting Saturday morning. I expect that means no posts from me after 8/17-8/27.

I would like to get another turn or two in this week. We are getting close to wrapping this adventure up but it seems likely that we will have to finish once I get back.

That said, start thinking about how you want to level up your guys. You will be getting two chronicles with the option to earn 6 XP total. That would be enough for 2 levels. Remember that we are playing CORE. If you take full rewards, you will be earning 5,247 GP, 6 XP and 10 PP. While there are a few unique things on the chronicles, I do not believe that they are necessarily things that folks will want or they cost very little.

Once this adventure is completed and I get everyone's leveled up guys, we can start the next adventure; Down the Blighted Path - Firebrand's Redoubt. I already have some maps and the first turn or two ready to go.

Ro-Mahn headed back up the stairs, jumped up to the railing and walked the narrow handhold. He tumbled past the dretch and landed on his feet with a flourish. "Ha! Have at you, slimy blighter!" Stabem made a sour face at the other rogue and stabbed the monster in monster in front of him. The cold iron rapier dealt 3 damage as the rogue yelled at Ro-Mahn, “You took my spot!”

Barnacleez stepped back up the stairs and cast Magic Missile. Two magic projectiles fired at the man behind the demons. The spell fizzled just before making contact. Lady Emyralda took a two-handed chop at the demon before her with her cold iron scimitar. The attack landed and dealt 3 damage to the dretch in front of her.

With a grin, Wormgnash released another spell-like ability damaging Wahesh, Cando and Stabem. The fighters took 3 damage each while the rogue took 7 damage.

Wahesh took swings with his swords. The cold iron longsword missed but the cold iron short sword found the mark dealing 8 damage. The demon contorted and disappeared with a popping noise. Wahesh stepped forward to make room for Cando.

The dretch in front of Stabem attacked with its claws and teeth but missed the rogue. It then stepped back in front of Wahesh. The demon engaged with Lady Emyralda also attacked. One claw and the bite managed to breach the cleric’s defenses and dealt 3 and 4 damage respectively.

Ro-Mahn descended the stairs and attacked the remaining mite with his cold iron rapier. He struck true dealing 8 damage and killed the monster. Stabem stepped to the side and attacked one of the newly arrived slimy monsters. The halfling poked the monster for 5 damage.

Barnacleez recognized the slimy monsters as dretches, a minor type of demon. He quickly recognized that the monsters were resistant to damage from weapons which are not cold iron or good aligned, are immune electricity and poison effects and have a moderate resistance to acid, cold and fire damage. Further, he recognized these as a variant strain known as slimy dretches. This meant that the monsters can cast Grease as a spell like ability rather than the usual complement of spells. The gnome called out a warning to his companions relaying these facts. Deciding that fire was not a great option, the sorcerer activated his wand once more and dealt 4 damage with a magic missile and stepped back from the melee. Heeding Barnacleez’s warning, Lady Emyralda cast Shield of Faith upon herself, drew her scimitar and moved forward into the melee.

The man in the doorway activated a spell-like ability resulting in a burst of negative energy targeting Stabem, Wahesh and Cando. Stabem was dealt 10 damage while Wahesh and Cando only suffered 5 damage each.

Wahesh ascended the stairs, moving next to Stabem. The fighter swung his cold iron longsword at the dretch. The blow landed and dealt 8 damage to the wounded demon but it remained standing. The demon attacked in return with two sets of claws and a bite but missed with each.

The demon next to Lady Emyralda also attacked and missed the cleric. The remaining demon stepped up to engage Stabem but it too missed with all of its attacks.

Cando continued to sing and stepped up behind Wahesh. The half-orc charged a dart with arcane energy and hurled it at the demon. The weapon missed sailing wide.

Three slimy creatures, coated in Demon’s Bile rush into the room. Their bloated frames shudders with each heaving step, yet despite their shape, the things move with surprising quickness. Behind the monsters is a bloated man with waxy features.

From the open doorway the man proclaims, “So, the heroes have arrived. Try not to make a mess when you die—I have great plans for your remains.”

Ro-Mahn moved forward and tumbled past the front rank of mites and took up a flanking position behind them. Stabem moved into position and stabbed the monster with his cold iron rapier. The attack stabbed the creature through the eye dealing 16 damage and killed it.

Barnacleez move to the railing and unleashed a burning hands spell that washed over the two mites in front of Wahesh. The fire washed over both enemies but did not appear to have any effect. Lady Emyralda stepped forward and targeted the rearmost mite with a firebolt. The attack struck the creature but also had no effect.

Wahesh attacked the mite in front of him and dealt 8 damage with his cold iron longsword. After cutting the monster down, the fighter stepped forward and attacked the next with his cold iron short sword. This blow landed for 10 damage and killed another monster. Cando continued to sing and moved down the stairs charging his axe with arcane energy. The next mite took a swing at the half-orc as he moved into attack position but it missed the target. Cando swung his Axe and dealt 5 damage past the monster’s damage reduction and dropped it.

The remaining mite stepped back and cast a doom spell at Cando. The half-orc failed to resist the spell and became shaken.

As the fight raged, the door to the west opened, releasing more combatants.

Wahesh moved forward to engage a mite. Cando moved forward and began to sing in a strong baritone. The bard ‘s song brought a sense of bravery and resolve to his companions.

Cando stepped into the room, bravely intending to wade through the sticky mess. Ro-Mahn reached out and held the half-orc from pressing further. "I applaud yer bravery, mate. Maybe clear the way with a bit o fire first, eh?" Ro-Mahn hurled and alchemist’s fire at the nearest squirming mass. The substance briefly caught fire but the flames quickly sputtered out. Cando shrugged and continue deeper into the room.

Stabem entered the room, stopping behind Cando, and looked around for traps. Barnacleez pushed up from the back into the doorway. The gnome cast a Disrupt Undead spell at the section of goo that Ro-Mahn has set afire. The substance hardened and turned to dust. The squirming mass landed on the floor with a thud. Wahesh entered the room and ran the creature through with his longsword and it ceased to move.

Lady Emyralda moved into the room and channeled positive energy. The burst cleared a significant portion of the Demon’s Bile. Masses fell from its embrace. Many hit the floor and stopped their struggles however some mites stood, terribly misshaped by their incubation. Elsewhere in the room, more monsters broke free of their confinement.

A web of thick, pulsating goo covers the walls and part of the floor of this room. Dozens of misshapen, puffy heads and arms stick out from throbbing sacs attached to the vile substance, their mouths wailing and moaning, and their twitching claws reaching out blindly. Spiraling stairs lead down to a central two-foot-deep recess decorated with diabolical symbols.

Lady Emyralda swam away from the monster, withdrawing from the combat. Wahesh swung both swords at the monster. The longsword landed dealing 5 damage to the submerged monster. The piercing short sword also hit and dealt 5 damage.

Stabem swam forward to get flanking with Cando. The monster struck at the splashing halfling as he moved but missed its target. Stabem poked the monster with his rapier and dealt 7 damage. This proved to be too much for the monster.

Cando, Wahesh and Stabem made sure that the creature was well and truly dead.

The water was still after vanquishing the leech. Moving aside barrels, Cando cleared the way for the party to reach a dry footing. Ro-Mahn scampered from barrel to barrel to ledge. The ranger/rogue located the secret door near the southwest corner of the room as depicted on the old map. Once the party was ready, and in position, Cando opened the door.
