The smell of stale beer and whiskey hang in the air of this room. A large wooden bar, complete with taps and a mirrored backsplash, runs along the far curved wall of this room. Tables, chairs, and barstools are scattered with use, while dirty glasses and empty bottles litter the sticky floors and flat surfaces.

Five gray-skinned dwarves occupy this room. One sits at a table covered with papers and a smoking pipe. Two of them stand nervously by the seated one while the remaining two lean against the bar and playfully taunt the two. The room is filled with a faint cloud of tobacco smoke.

Startled by the party’s sudden appearance, the dwarves begin to reach for their arms.

There was a debate between the party members but the majority thought that seeking out the sally port was a better plan than walking through the damaged and ajar front doors. Ro-Mahn and Stabem were for pressing ahead immediately while the remainder of the party felt that finding a different way inside might be more prudent.

After about 30 minutes of travel, and about another 30 minutes of searching, the party was able to locate the secret entrance to the redoubt. The information provided by the townsfolk and Erna proved helpful in locating the entrance.

Within the passage, the party discovered two dead Davarn outpost guards. Lady Emyralda determined that the cause of death was bleeding due to wounds inflicted by slashing and bludgeoning weapons. Each guard was armed with a masterwork dwarven waraxe. An everburning torch lay near the bodies.

The passage ended at a secret door. The sounds of movement and talking could be heard from the other side.

DtBP: Firebrand’s Redoubt - GM Turn Post 14

After several hours and miles of walking the twisted, switchback riddled length of Taggun’s Crawl, the party spies their planned destination.

A dwarven-built wall surrounds a courtyard cut into the cavern. Grand doors depicting dour, dwarven faces and angular glyphs stand beyond that open space. The metal doors to the redoubt are ajar, twisted and bent by brute force, and a line of light spills out from the opening. Statuary of dwarves decorates the courtyard, some of them showing signs of recent vandalism. The walkway from the main gate to the front door is littered with debris from the broken statues and overturned benches.

Do you wish to procced through the courtyard and main door or do you want to seek out the sally port?

Accepting the Mayor’s offer for employment, the party lent a hand in the aftermath of the attack. While assisting the locals, they uncovered some interesting pieces of information (See DtBP: Firebrand’s Redoubt - GM TurnPost 12).

Lady Delbera Axebringe’s fortress, Firebrand’s Redoubt, is located several mile down the eastern tunnel exiting the city. This passage is known as Taggun’s Crawl. During the investigation of the attack, four dead guards were found near open tunnel gates to Taggun’s Crawl. By examining the bodies, Lady Emyralda finds small puncture wounds in their backs and signs of poison around the wounds.

Reports of other missing dwarves begin to arrive in the crowded marketplace, including dozens of members of the town guard. Mayor Bensik asks people to return to their homes and secure themselves against additional undead incursions, while Erna Stoneheart begins rallying any guards who remain unabducted and uninjured. Both the major and the guard captain ask for your assistance.

The mayor offers you a reward of 3,500 gp to investigate where these undead came from and to rescue as many of her citizens as possible.

As the situation sorts itself, the party may make skill checks to remember and/or gather additional information.

Stabem tumbled and flanked the monster with Cando. The halfling struck a mighty blow with his rapier and dealt 13 damage which destroyed the undead.

Ro-Mahn waited for Cando to move to flank the remaining skeletal champion. Both adventurers attacked the monster but neither was able to land a blow. Barnacleez cast a Magic Missile spell targeting the monster. The spell struck and dealt 11 damage which caused the monster to fall to pieces.

Lady Emeralda channeled positive energy to heal 10 damage from Cando and Erna.

With the threat eliminated, Wahesh moved to Lukher and helped the dwarf to his feet.

A search of the bodies revealed that each of the skeletal champions was wearing masterwork scale mail and carrying a masterwork dwarven urgrosh. Under their armor, each set of remains had a large pin of silver and onyx driven through its breastbone. Each pin has an estimated value of 400 gp.

The uniforms of the undead each had a flaming double-headed waraxe insignia. During the battle, Cando recognized this insignia as belonging to the house of Lady Delbera Axebringer. Erna and Lukher can confirm this.

A few words ...

I am back. Sorry for the radio silence. It took some time and distance to get back into the proper head space to keep this game moving.

I am re-employed and now have a couple of weeks under my belt. I can not focus on some neglected things. With everyone's help, I will do my best to keep the game moving forward.

Cando took a mighty, two-handed swing at the monster with his double axe but missed the mark. Having paused to admire his friend, Barnacleez moved for a better view of the monster and cast Disrupt Undead. The spell missed the target due to the monster’s proximity to his friends.

Lady Emyralda moved to the center of the battlefield and channeled positive energy to heal 6 damage from Cando and Erna.

Having dispatched his foe, the fighter/bard rushed forward with a shout to the aid of Lukher.

Lady Emyralda stepped away from the monster in front of her and channeled positive energy to heal her companions. The power of the cleric’s god removed 12 damage from Erna and Cando and healed Ro-Mahn, Wahesh and Stabem to full. The guard captain regained consciousness and started to gather herself.

The follow through attack hit the halfling for 8 damage. The right monster stepped to attack Wahesh and Erna. He stabbed it with his magic rapier before it could raise its weapon in defense. Even though it was not the optimum weapon, the blow still dealt 14 damage. Erna moved to the right of Ro-Mahn and attacked the next monster but the guard captain missed her target.

Barnacleez cast a Bull’s Strength spell upon Cando. The half-orc charged the left-most monster and scored a hit with his double axe. The attack dealt an additional 7 damage to the wounded monster. Once up close, Cando identified the insignia upon the uniforms as belonging to the house of Lady Delbera Axebringer, a local hero.

Lady Emyralda identified the monsters as undead, skeletal champions. She called out that bludgeoning weapons would be most effective and that elemental cold attacks would be useless. Further, she recognized that the monsters were also trained fighters. The cleric moved up behind Ro-Mahn and channeled positive energy to hurt the monsters. A burst of divine energy washed over the enemies. The already damaged foe was dealt 12 damage while the rest took just 6 damage.

Following on the heels of Erna Stoneheart, the party reached the scene of the disturbance. Several defeated guardsmen lay in the street.  Four skeletal monsters dressed in the remains of an armored uniform surrounded Lukher Stinnison. Each wasarmed with a dwarven urgrosh with their uniforms bearing a flaming double-headed waraxe insignia. One of the monsters had the dwarf pinned and was dragging him along as the other three guarded its flank.

DtBP: Firebrand’s Redoubt - GM Turn Post 6

Festival concludes with large, public feast in the market square alongside musical performances and speeches from various important locals. Dinner, served across dozens of buffet tables, consists of mushroom dishes, hearty breads, and beer from downside as well as roast boar, game hens, and fresh greens from the surface. Most attendees bring out their own tables or spread blankets on the cobblestones, and festival-goers wander from blanket to blanket, saying their final goodbyes and sharing one last drink before returning to the trade routes or their everyday tasks.

As the winners of the Spring Muddle, the party joins Mayor Bensik at her table as honored guests, sitting with local officials as well as Erna Stoneheart, who attends as guard captain rather than a competitor. Lukher declines to join the party, claiming he needs to find a few business contacts in the crowd.

About half way through the meal, screams of terror rise from the picnic area near the market square’s far end. A dwarf dressed in a Davarn guard uniform runs into the pavilion and calls to Erna Stoneheart. “Captain, come quickly, they have Lukher!”

Grabbing her axe, Erna Stoneheart follows the guard back into the crowd toward the screaming people.

What do you do?

DtBP: Firebrand’s Redoubt – Turn Results 5

It was a close fought, if unconventional, Spring Muddle. Besides the flags gathered by Cando and Stabem, Lou G’Boo ended up capturing 3 more flags. This resulted in the rest of the team blocking for and assisting Barnacleez through the obstacles that the monkey easily navigated. Since by the rules the familiar was acting as the gnome’s agent, he had to complete the tasks as well for the captured to be counted as valid.

Although defeated, the Davarn Chokers were friendly and congratulatory when the contest was over. They recognized a well fought “battle” and shared handshakes and laughs with the new champions.

In a short ceremony, back in the market square, the party was declared the champions. They were awarded the first-place prize, 2,500 gp, an adamantine battleaxe, and a pearl of power (1st). As the runner-up, the Davarn Chockers were presented 1,000 gp, a masterwork battleaxe, and bracers of armor +1.
