A Vision of Betrayal GM Turn Post 4

The sound of running water echoes ahead, and several muted beams of light pierce the thick forest canopy. Soon the dense forest opens, revealing a river that blocks the way forward. A large felled tree trunk offers a way over the swift moving river. With the exception of the rushing sound of the water, an eerie silence pervades the area, as does the fresh smell of death.

The half-eaten carcass of a large deer stains the forest’s foliage near a fast moving river 10 feet in front of the party.
Starting positions for Turn 4 are displayed on the Combat Map.

What do you do?

  1. OK help me out here.... the carcass is where?

I am reading what you wrote and I am understanding it as: The carcass is 10ft from the river; we appear to be 30ft from the base of that large log half-submerged in the river...?

    1. The carcass is 10 feet in front of Noc and Jerry in L19.

  2. I read it as about L19 half eaten carcass.

ooc: Does it look like a balance check to get across the stream? Is it broken as in the picture or is it solid.

My Profession is Fisherman can I get anything useful about the river?

Can we see if there is a troll under the bridge?

Does Nester say this is a safe way to go?

    1. An Acrobatics (balance) check would be appropriate to cross the log.

The river looks like a river. You imagine that you could fish it and likely catch some fresh fish.

No trolls that you can see ...

Nestor indicates that this should be the way to cross based upon the map received from Grandmaster Torch but he cannot say for sure as he has never traveled this way before.

    1. Nothing seems out of the ordinary except for the dead deer. Several rake marks scar the carcass, suggesting a powerful feline felled this animal.

Further, Jerry notices fresh paw indentations in the forest’s dirt floor leading to the large oak tree trunk that bridges the gap over the river.

  4. Once we are happy with this side of the river, Jerry will be the 1st to cross the log bridge.

    2. The river moves somewhat swiftly but it does not seem overyly difficult to swim. You expect it is easier to cross using the log than to swim it but not by much.

  5. Investigate the scene (i.e. carcass) cast Detect Magic.

Draw weapon (if not already) since something is very close.

Move to cross river on bridge if ok'ed by Jerry.

You stated: Further, Jerry notices fresh paw indentations in the forest’s dirt floor leading to the large oak tree trunk that bridges the gap over the river.

Can you climb this tree or is it a stump? Hollow to climb in and ambush?

  7. As you perform your investigations from this side of the river, Jerry, Fergus and Ronan Hex all get the feeling of something watching you.

  8. What is the plan? Do you cross the river? Do you make camp for the night? I need a group plan so that I can post the next turn.

Still looking for posts from Brad and Steve.

  9. It's not camping time, is it? I say we cross the river and spring the trap.

    1. Yes, as stated in the Turn 3 results "Travel through the forested foothills is difficult and slow. It takes the remainder of the day for you to come to a clearing near a river. It will soon be time to make camp."

Not saying that you need to camp right here but you need to stop soon. If you want to cross the river and search for a camp site, that is an reasonable course of action. When you do camp, I will require a watch order (assuming you set one).
