GoM: The Festering Blot - GM Turn Post 1

In the interest of keeping our current momentum, we can start the next adventure without new character sheets but cannot go too far. There are potentially some investigating and legwork at the beginning.

Once again the party finds themselves within the mayor’s office.

Although it’s covered in a layer of files and paperwork that indicate its official nature, this office is also eminently comfortable, with its plush carpet, velvet-lined oaken furniture, and ornate serving carts bearing colorful fruit and fine drinks. The soothing smell of sage and apple blossoms floats on a warm breeze wafting through the large, open picture window.

At the center of the room, behind a solid and polished wooden desk, sits Mayor Sandra Trinelli, her long fingers folded together in thought. Her face is solemn as she surveys her visitors. “Thank you for your quick attention to my request,” she begins, motioning to the oversized chairs in front of her. “As you can imagine, it involves a delicate task that promises results of great significance to our beleaguered population. Let me explain.

“The history of this town, I’m afraid, is written in blood. More than a century ago, the family that founded Saringallow committed heinous crimes against the hard-working folks who toiled on their behalf. When all was said and done, these nobles—the Sarinis—kidnapped and murdered many local children. They were hanged for their crimes, but the bodies of the youths were never found, and our families still suffer those tragic memories today. After all of these years, they’ve never had closure, and our town has never been the same.

“However, not long ago, while I was searching the town archives, I discovered a few old letters that seem to indicate that these evil nobles kept records of their victims and diabolical rituals. Finding these documents would go a long way toward healing the deep wounds the Sarinis inflicted on our poor people.

“Unfortunately, the evidence is presumably stored in the Sarinis old, walled estate, which is located some distance from Saringallow proper. Around here, superstitions regarding the Sarini family still run deep, and the good men and women of our town watch— bless their hearts—are reluctant to help. There’s no proof, however, that any of the rumors about the Sarini Estate are real, so I’d like to hire you help me solve this matter. Please, if you will, bring me any records of these terrible crimes that exist. Once you do, I believe our town will finally begin to heal. I trust that you are capable, and I hope that a reward of 100 gp will be enough to persuade you to help.”

Do you have any additional questions for the mayor?

  1. I am assuming we know exactly where the Sarinis old, walled estate is.
    We can have a map?

You said "evil nobles kept records" are their more people involved in these legends than the Sarinis?

    1. “The estate is a large place, with two main stories and a basement, or so the old stories go, but we don’t have a map of the place in our archives. Given what horrors happened there, the townsfolk have always given the place a wide berth—no one here is greedy enough to covet the murder-tainted valuables that hated family might have owned. Some things are more important than gold, you know. The Sarinis and everything tied to them are a blot on our existence.

“The estate is located about 10 miles from town, down a road almost no one travels except for foolhardy youths trying to prove themselves. Given its isolation, I would not be surprised if there weren’t a few dangers
in or around the place. You’d do well to arm yourselves sufficiently before heading out.”

The estate is about a 3 hour walk to the north. You will follow the road known as Nobles' Folly to get there.

  2. "Do the Sarinis have any surviving ancestors? Here or elsewhere?"
"Are there elders that were witness to the Sarinis cruelty still about?"
"What vile gods did they venerate?"

    1. "It has been well over a century since these events transpired. This tragedy has had several generations to generate rumors, but they’re all nonsense, as far as I’m concerned. Some say the estate is haunted by the spirits of those murdered there; others say the estate has collapsed under its own weight, and still others believe diabolic powers still lurk within and plot against us. Given what the town suffered, can you blame them for projecting their fears into that hated place?”

    2. “It’s a painful history,” she admits, “but more than a hundred years ago, our town was little more than rural holdings belonging to Cheliax’s House Sarini. At some point, the Sarinis began dabbling in diabolism. It made everyone uncomfortable by all accounts, but no one said anything
      until it was too late.”

“Those horrible nobles exsanguinated several innocent youths in service to their dark patrons, like they were nothing but toys. The townspeople rose up, and in their rage, they hanged every Sarini they could get their hands on. They changed the town’s name to Sarini Gallows as a warning, though it eventually became Saringallow. Since then we’ve never
knowingly suffered a Sarini’s presence in our town.”

  3. Is there a place (a church, town hall, library) in town where I might research any of this history?

    1. “We have quite a bit of information available about the time period in question in the town hall’s archives. I suggest that you start there. Find my assistant, Lupia Marietti. She’s a kind woman and will help you with whatever you need.”

  4. On behalf of Joe:

Since Wahesh isn't all that big on archive research, he'll suggest the human intelligence angle and ask around if anyone's been brave/stupid enough to visit the Sarini estate recently or ever.

    2. Cando, hoping to hone his bardic talents a little further, thinks Wahesh has a good idea here... He heads over to the tavern, and spends some time talking with the locals while idly working on a new heroic song. The song concerns the bravery of the local populace, living in the shadows of that evil estate just up the road... he solicits advice from the crowd, perhaps specific deeds associated with the place? Or names of brave heroes who have journeyed up there in recent memory? To give it more local flavor and make it more authentic sounding...

    4. On behalf of Joe:

Wahesh would also like to check back with some of the people who we met over the Foul Breed arc and know that we're fairly serious adventurers.
Father Ildrus, Ms Pricknettle, the tavern keeper, and some of the apprentices we rescued. I think they'd tell us if they knew anything useful.

  6. What kind of stuff are you guys spending your gold on? Or are you still hoarding it? Contemplating a couple of purchases, but not sure what I want to get just yet. And Keith - I will try to have my character updated and sent to you, tonight.

    1. Since the spending limit is at 500gp on a single item, I'm hanging onto my gp till its higher. (There is nothing on the always available list that I want, cause I don't use weapons & armor)

    2. Remember that normal PFS rules apply. 500 gp spending limit at your current Fame of 8 unless the item is on a chronicle or an always available item. You may also spend PP to get stuff (max 2 PP per chronicle).

Dave ended up buying +1 armor, 2 MW cold iron weapons and a wand of CLW with 2 PP.

  7. Sounds like you are out of questions for the mayor. So will Barnacleez, Ro-Mahn and Lady Emyralda seek out the archive while Wahesh and Cando seek information from the townsfolk?

At this point, I expect Stabem wanders off into the wilderness.
