DtBP: Firebrand’s Redoubt - GM Turn Post 1

After your time in Saringallow, you have recently arrived in the dwarven trading town of Davarn in the Five Kings Mountains. The town hosts its Spring Festival every year to celebrate the spring thaw that opens the mountain passes into Druma and Andoran. The highlight of every Spring Festival is the Spring Muddle, where dozens of teams composed of everyone from children to professional athletes compete in challenges of combat, skill, and speed. It all culminates in a final trial, affectionately called Spinebreaker Mountain.

You have arrived with the first outside trade caravan and your employer and the receiver of the transported goods, Lukher Stinnison, a young dwarven merchant, has sponsored your entry as a team in the Spring Muddle tournament as a bonus. He explains that the winning and the second place finishing teams of the competition's obstacle course each win a cash prize and some magic items. The purse is jointly sponsored by the town guards and the temple of Torag.

When the winter’s cold releases the Five Kings Mountains and the spring rains wash away the snows that blanket the area, the residents of Davarn celebrate the return of songbirds and trade caravans with their annual Spring Festival. The event occurs a full week after the spring equinox to celebrate Davarn’s official reopening along trade routes to Druma, Isger, and Andoran. While some caravans arrive earlier, the town sends out engineering teams before the event to clear and repair any road damage caused during the winter months. Colorful banners decorate the public square surrounding the city reservoir, and the surface doors are thrown wide to flush out the stagnant winter air and replace it with mountain breezes and the smell of freshly baked pies and roasted meats. Traveling performers set up their stages to entertain the young and old alike with puppet shows, music, and death-defying stunts. Davarn’s residents build temporary stalls to display their finest handicrafts, worked metals, and raw materials mined deeper in the cave systems beyond the town.

You are free to enjoy the festival and explore the town. The town has a normal population of just over 2,000 but this number swells during the Festival.

  1. Bensik Estate: Davarn’s largest home belongs to the Bensik clan.
  2. Choker’s Run: This tangled neighborhood houses Davarn’s poorest residents.
  3. Davarn Reservoir: The abundant fresh water that pooled in this cave.
  4. Davarn Town Hall: As one of the oldest buildings in Davarn, the town hall bears many of the practical touches of the Torag-influenced design.
  5. Davarn Waterworks: The waterworks are a marvel of engineering that dominates the reservoir’s western shore.
  6. Five Kings Customs House: Davarn’s customs house operates on behalf of both the city and neighboring Taggoret.
  7. The Hall of Torag: serves as a holy gathering place to the town’s many faithful of the Father of Creation.
  8. Kalistrade Library: This temple accommodates Davarn’s small but growing population of devotees to the Prophecies of Kalistrade.
  9. Kardack’s Shaft: Arguably the oldest mine in Davarn.
  10. The Lucky Imp: Davarn’s premier inn, tavern, and dance hall rests near the tunnel that joins upside and downside.
  11. Redin’s Mine and Ironworks: Redin’s Mine is in a steady feud with Kardack’s Shaft over which is the oldest, most productive, and safest mine in Davarn.
  12. Stinnison’s Emporium: Run by local gadfly Lukher, the emporium specializes in “affordable magical solutions,” primarily potions and alchemical goods within the reach of everyday citizens, alongside a few snake oils, folk remedies, and “lucky” baubles to cater to the superstitious.
  13. The Stone of Elders: While most of Davarn’s faith belongs to Torag, the small town honors the remainder of the dwarven pantheon on their respective holy days or when their circumstances beg divine assistance. This large, round temple provides shrines for the nine additional members of the dwarven pantheon, and its circular shape theoretically means no one god is prioritized above the others.
  14. The Tipsy Scales: The largest gambling hall in Davarn, which caters more to travelers than residents.

    1. It is less than 200 miles to the southeast. Saringallow is part of Isger. Davarn is part of the Five King Mountains region. Druma is to the north and Andoran is to the south. I will post a map.

  3. "Well, this is a damn sight better'n tha Gallows town, innit? Let's see if we can win us a contest, aye?"

Ro-Mahn will wander the town and gather information. Is there a thieve's guild? What other teams pose an actual threat to our prize?
He'll start at the Lucky Imp and work his way to the gambling hall.

    2. Ro-Mahn does some digging.

The Davarn Chokers are last year's winners and are the favorites to win again this year. They are lead by Guard Captain, Erna Stoneheart, a cousin of the party's employer, Lukher.

While there may be some petty thievery, crimes of opportunity and graft, there does not appear to be an organized thieve's guild in Davarn.

The Lucky Imp is Lijini Marbeket, matriarch of a large gnome family, is the proprietor of the establishment. The Lucky Imp recruits extra employees during town festivals to help oversee the swell of visitors and provide additional meal service.

The Tipsy Scales is owned an run by a dwarf, Vampa Kardack. Ro-Mahn learns that locally the establishment is referred to as the "Crooked Scales" and Vampa is the closest thing there is to a crime boss in town.

  5. Barnacleez thought.. "Well that Saringallow business is finally over, yeesh. Riding and guarding caravans is a treat compared to that evil goo infestation, and those demons, and such.

And there's a festival going on here as well. I hope there are some games of chance and such to partake in.

And not just log rolling and other lumber jacking events like that Minnasoda place I used to live near. I imagine the dwarves don't cotton to much of that. Prolly be rock climbing and chiseling and bolder throwing, an such.

Not much for me to do, I can barely carry my own weight in this party. Good thing Lou helps out, although she's not any stronger than me.

I should find her a belt of giant strength, that would give people pause to ponder. She's only a foot tall, but if she could lift a cart, boy that'd be something.

well I best get around and talk to folk and see what this festival is all about."

Barnacleez (and Lou G'Boo) will wonder around talking to the townsfolk about the festival and the Spring Muddle. He will talk with anyone that will give him the time of day.

    1. There are several local dwarves and a few gnomes in town that strike up conversations with Barnacleez. He finds the Lucky Imp to be a marvelous place with plenty of objects to wonder over and talk to. The owner, Lijini Marbeket reminds him of his grandmother.

The culmination of the Spring Muddle is the obstacle course on Spinebreaker Mountain, a small island in the middle of the city reservoir. The obstacle course is run simultaneously by two teams. Participants line up on the southwestern landing of the island, and six obstacles block the way, each with its own red flag. Teams score points by getting as many members as possible to the peak and by capturing flags.

  6. Hey, Keith:

Do I or anyone else find out the following?

-Do we hear any addition info on our opponents, the Davarn Chokers and their Captain?

-Do they play fair or are they notorious cheaters? How violent on a scale of 1-10 are they?

-And is this a “friendly contest” like the Olympics or more like brutal elimination like Death Race 2000 or something?

-Any word on what our employer, Lukher’s intent is? Are we here as exiting opposition or as cannon fodder?

-Is there bad blood between Erna and Lukher?

-Is Vampa known to meddle in the contests with his gambling interests in mind?

    Points to ponder O_o

    1. Lukher primarily banks on his family reputation as the grandson of Delbera Axebringer’s sister. He usually provides quality merchandise, but a few questionable business deals and his overbearing charm have earned him a reputation as a bit of a huckster. Hoping to combat this image, Lukher sponsors a team in the Spring Muddle every year. This year’s original team apparently ditched the merchant and he entered the party as their replacements.

Spinebreaker Mountain is a friendly, non-lethal contest. Real weapons may not be carried or used during the race, though wooden practice versions of weapons that deal nonlethal damage are permitted (and are available for purchase at half the normal weapon price at several stalls in the town’s market), as are any weapons that deal nonlethal damage. Knocking an opponent unconscious is legal, but it’s considered poor sportsmanship.

The Davarn Chokers are all locals and friends, and train for this tournament in their free time. While far from undefeated, they are last year’s champions. All are strong and resourceful athletes who love the competition. This year’s team consists of Erna Stoneheart (Female dwarf, guard captain), Gerherd Roderson (Male dwarf, acolyte and smith at the temple of Torag), Mavin Marbeket (Female gnome, sorcerer), Targrenon Raedad (Male human, scoundrel), Hetty Skree (Female human, surveyor in Redin’s Mine) and Gazebelle the Green (Female gnome, paladin of the church of Erastil).

Guard Captain Erna Stoneheart is a steadfast defender of the city against riffraff and duergar attacks alike. She is the great-niece of Delbera Axebringer. Erna is a well-respected member of the community and sees the Muddle as a fun distraction from her very serious life.
