The festival grounds begin to thin out as most attendees
line up along the rope barrier surrounding the city reservoir. An angry-looking
spur of granite pokes up from the water, carved into a spiraling obstacle
course marked with poles, logs, and ropes. The crowd bursts into cheers as the
other semifinalist team and defending champions, the Davarn Chokers, approach
the starting line. Their dwarven leader, Erna Stoneheart, waves to the crowd as
they shout her name. Her teammates follow suit, waving and smiling as the chant
of “Chokers! Chokers!” rises above the general cheering.
The course is outfitted with climbing nets and towers,
balance beams, swinging ropes over the river, and red flags. A large bat
familiar hangs lazily from a perch near the starting line, clutching an
additional red silk flag.
Begin Combat Round 1. Starting positions are displayed on
the combat map.
While this is being run in initiative order and you are competing with the other team, this is not a serious combat.

Map Key:
A1 - The Swim - 40-foot water-filled gap. The flag is 20 feet below the surface of the water in the center of the gap.
A2 - The Stump Walk - Stone columns, each slightly taller than the next, jut up from the water here, forming a sort of stairway to the next level. The flag is tied to the northernmost column.
A3 - The Net Climb - A net is draped over this 20-foot-tall cliff face. The flag is located atop a 20-foot-tall pole at the top of the net.
A4 - The Balance Beams - Two beams run across a long gap that is 20 feet above the water. One is a 40-foot-long, 8-inch-wide beam, and the other a 25-foot-long, 4–inch-wide beam. The flag is tied to a revolving pole that runs between the two bars.
A5 - The Rope Swing - A pair of knotted ropes are secured above this 15-foot gap. The flag hangs slightly below the bottom of the arcs of the ropes.
A6 - The Dummy Gauntlet - An array of spinning, wooden dummies crowds this 30-foot stretch of the course. The flag is lashed to the central dummy.
The Creature Flag - In addition to the six obstacle flags, a different creature carries a seventh flag every year, wandering the course to harry or hide from competitors. This year’s creature is Skagit, the bat familiar of one of the event organizers.

Party Health:
Cando Numida (39/39), Wahesh Captain (49/49), Stabem (38/38), Lady Emyralda (37/37),
Ro-Mahn (35/35), Barnacleez (42/42), Lou G'Boo (21/21)
Team:
ReplyDeleteAnybody have an idea for overall strategy? How do we split this up? Wahesh can swim +3, making me think that he should go for A1. But he also has a potion of fly (if that is legal - Keith? Or maybe it would be if I went for the bat.)
Maybe Lou G'Boo goes after A3?
I'm assuming Wahesh is not in armor but does have wooden weapons, is that right?
Any form of flying or teleportation will get you disqualified.
DeleteYou can wear armor or not as your character chooses. You can get wooden weapons that deal non-lethal damage in town at half the cost of the appropriate lethal version. i.e. a wooded long sword will cost 7 GP, 5 SP rather than 15 GP.
Can I get a mw sap?
DeleteSure, as long as you can afford to buy one.
DeleteOh! And what's the name of our Team?? The Six Demandments? :D
ReplyDeleteFive guys, a girl and a monkey?
DeleteI like it - cuz, you know; monkey.
DeleteLOl. Ok, I'll get me me non-lethal weapons.
DeleteAnd so...5G+1G&1M it is? Any opposed?
(oooo, good password too.)
Nevermind about the fly. Is illegal :(
ReplyDeleteHey! These guys are scary-looking! O_O
ReplyDeleteI need to know the following in your turn posts:
ReplyDelete- Initiative
- Other rolls
- Planned action
- Wearing armor?
- Purchased wooded/nonlethal weapons?
- Any other retroactive purchases based upon contest rules.
Barnacleez thought "oh joy, a race. don't they understand, it's always a race when you're a Gnome.
ReplyDeleteso here we are at the starting line. waiting on the starters arrow shot.
I've talked with Lou G'Boo, she says she understands that we are after the flags. she should have a slight advantage being tiny and very able to climb. i've told her she can finally use the smokestick & thunderstones, and i have instructed her on how they work. told her its just like fling poo, except one makes a smokescreen and the rest make a loud bang. i think i'll be ready with buff spells like bulls strength and invisibility, and others. it's high time we get this show on the road.."
- Initiative - 14+8=22
- Other rolls -d20 = 2, 2, 9, 15, 14
- Planned action - Barnacleez' plan is to try to keep up with the group, and have Lou do any of the climbing feats to get flags.
- Wearing armor? -no armor, but i will cast mage armor on me & my monkee well before the race starts
- Purchased wooded/nonlethal weapons? -wooden hvy mace
- Any other retroactive purchases based upon contest rules.
Is Lou G'Boo going to swim the gap or climb the cliff wall? I assume that Barnacleez plans to swim. True?
DeleteLouis will climb. Barnacleez will swim after bulls strength ing himself.
ReplyDeleteLou G'Boo, spell check error
ReplyDeleteWahesh bows and shouts back to the crowd, encouraging the cheers and boos, willing to play the role of face or heel, though I'm guess we're heels!
ReplyDeleteInitiative: 2 + 8 = 10
Rolls: 7, 19, 12, 3, 15
Action: swim straight for the flag at L14. If he is not the fastest swimmer of our group, then run interference and try to delay the Chokers.
I'm open to strategy advice though!
Swim roll: 13+3=16
No armor but yes nonlethal weapons.
That's posts from two of you. Still need posts from Matt H, Matt F, Dave and Steve.
ReplyDelete14+8=22 initiative
ReplyDelete19,16,5,13,15
I want to just make a B-line as quickly to A-3 that I can
I also bought a sap
Climbing or swimming? What path do you plan to take? Are you wearing armor?
DeleteCando decides to go sans-armor to increase his agility on the course, and eschews his normal weaponry as well. But just because he's paranoid... he will keep his new saps on his hips.
ReplyDeleteInitiative: 13 +6 = 19
Actions .... oy. Running jump into the water, then start to swim!?
Jump roll: 15 +2 = 17
If I swim this round, I have a 10 +8 = 18
Other rolls: 5,9,17,17,3
sorry, to be clear, going straight out after the flag in front of me first.
DeleteI will do what I can to help the team. I will buy a Wooden Scimitar.
ReplyDeleteCan I change spells before the day? I wasn't really thinking about it for the competition.
I will wear armor (Everything else in my bag just in case).
Roll(5d20)+0:
14,19,12,4,20,+0

Delete3 - Water Walk
Delete2 - Find Traps
2 - Bull Strength

DeleteCast Bless and follow
DeleteStill looking for a post from Dave. Need prepared spell list from Matt F.
ReplyDeleteFFSD! lol...
ReplyDeleteAdded Dave back to comment notification list.
ReplyDeleteOnce I get Dave's post, I will post the next turn.
ReplyDeleteRo-Mahn will try and coax the flag from the bat. Using Handle Animal:15 or Diplomacy: 20 or even Sleight of Hand: 20. Also, move to H12 to better talk to him/her/it.
ReplyDelete"Oh, clever Skagit? May I have that bauble please?"
Wearing and carrying all normal gear, plus his shiny new mw sap.
15 2 4 14 2
"Here bat-bat-bat, come on, boy, who's a good bat." :D
DeleteCould it be that easy??
