Upon seeing the bug, Ro-Mahn charged forward and stabbed the vermin with his rapier for 3 damage. As the rouge reached the centipede, a mite mounted on a second one appeared. The monsters let loose with two arrows from its short bow. The first hit Ro-Mahn dealing 9 damage while the second one narrowly missed. The mounted monster rushed forward, climbed over the railing and up the stairs to the second floor and cover.

Baranacleez rushed forward to the doorway and unleashed his wand upon the visible centipede. The Magic Missile hit and dealt 3 damage and killed the beast. Wahesh rushed into the room and made for the stairs. Lady Emyralda followed the fighter and entered the room moving as fast as she could. Stabem moved in and next to Ro-Mahn. Cando moved in as well and next to the rogue to the left.

The floor, walls, pillars, and fireplaces of this majestic ballroom are all made of polished marble. On the north side of the room, a grand staircase with divided flights leads up to a balcony overlooking the ballroom floor. An angel of black marble is standing menacingly on a platform behind the middle landing of the staircase.

As the party enters the room, a giant fiendish centipede rears up just west of the staircase.

A search of the kitchen revealed little of value. The one thing that was discovered was a 5-pound keg of salt.

After a brief discussion, the party decided to finish investigating the first floor before descending into the basement. The western door was chosen as the next one to explore.

Two large tables flank an oven built into the west wall of this kitchen. Jars of different sizes sit on the two tables in uneven rows. A narrow set of stairs leads down to a dark, musty basement.

Ro-Mahn and Stabem did their rounds and checked all the doors for locks and traps. They did not discover any. The door to the southwest was ajar and revealed an abandoned pantry beyond.

Once assured it was safe to proceed, the party decided to explore the door to the north.

Ro-Mahn and Barnacleez worked on deciphering the journal from the boy’s grave. After close to an hour of study, the pair gleaned what information that the book still contained.

The journal recounted the adventures of Marcius Sarini in Sargava as a young officer. The book narrated interactions with Sargavans and bloody skirmishes with monsters. During his time abroad, Marcius befriended many locals and learned much about the traps and poisonous plants they used for hunting. He also met a brilliant woman named Eshebe, who had a son not quite a year after she and Marcius became acquainted. The final part of the book discussed hunting trips, including a successful manticore hunt and a plan to kill a chimera, but the ending of the story is missing.

Lady Emyralda recognized the gold disk as a holy symbol of Aroden.

Once done at the crypt, the party moved back through the garden to the eastern entrance of the manor house.

Ro-Mahn and Stabem searched the tomb while the rest of the party stood by outside. Barnacleez moved to the doorway to watch and lend assistance if necessary.

The coffins on the dais proved to be empty. Most of the coffins set into the walls had occupants but contained nothing remarkable.

One of the other coffins contained the bones of an adolescent boy. The corpse was still clutching an old journal, whose dedication read “to Luca.” Moisture has rendered the journal nearly illegible. Careful study (3d6 hours) or a successful linguistics check and time (3d6x10 minutes) can reveal some of its contents.

The coffin also contains a palm-sized golden disk with a winged eye carved onto it. The disk is worth 100 gp.

Before the rogues dealt with the trap, Lady Emyralda offered to heal Stabem. Cando waved off the cleric and used two charges of his wand of Cure Light Wounds to heal the halfling instead.

Ro-Mahn determined that the trap would have been triggered when someone tried to open the door. The statues’ wings would have unfurled, and sliced anyone standing in front of the door. Stabem concurred with his companion’s assessment. Barnacleez held his breath and refused to blink until the trap was handled. Ro-Mahn went to work and disabled the trap.

Stabem took his turn on the door’s old, rusted lock. The rogue managed to unlock the portal with minimal effort. The halfling opened the door to reveal the interior of the crypt.

GoM: The Festering Blot - GM Turn Post 13

Hidden amid a copse of gnarled trees sits a large mausoleum of polished granite. Statues of weeping angels of green-tinged bronze flank the closed entrance. A tarnished silver doorplate on the black steel door reads, “Sarini.”

From their look and positioning, Ro-Mahn thinks that the statues are trapped.

With wand in hand, Barnacleez moved closer to the fighting to achieve line of sight. Stabem tumbled behind the creature to get flanking with Ro-Mahn. The rogue stabbed into the bushes but missed the concealed monster. During his attack, the halfling came into contact with the plants and became sickened. Ro-Mahn stabbed at the monster from where he stood but the rapier missed the mark.

The frog turned and bit Stabem. The attack dealt 8 damage and pulled the halfling into the monster’s maw.

Cando moved to engage the frog. Lady Emyralda examined her dead foe looking to see if there was any ingested treasure. Wahesh attacked the frog in the bush, hacking with his longsword and short sword. The longsword connected and dealt 6 damage. This was enough to drop the beast and release Stabem as it was rendered unconscious.

The frog had no treasure but careful harvesting of the local plants yielded 125 gp worth of ingredients for antidotes and medicines.

The gazebo proved unremarkable and empty.

The party formed up and moved on to investigate the mausoleum.

Barnacleez pointed his wand at the nearest frog and fired a Magic Missile. The spell hit the amphibian and dealt 2 damage. Stabem moved toward the manor house to attack the frog to the north. The halfling struck a blow with his rapier but missed the creature entrenched in the bushes. Ro-Mahn stepped forward and struck at the beast with is cold iron rapier. He too missed the monster in the shrubbery.

The northern frog tried to bite Stabem but missed the rogue. The southern frog lashed out again with its tongue. This time the sticky appendage struck the cleric and wrapped her up. The tongue retracted and pulled her closer to the monster’s greedy mouth.

Cando charged his double-axe with his arcane energy and stepped forward assist the cleric. The first blow landed and dealt 10 damage but the second swing missed. Lady Emyralda swung her scimitar in her own defense and struck a telling blow. The scimitar severed the tongue and dealt 4 damage which dropped the monster.

Wahesh rushed forward to assist the rogues with the remaining frog. The fighter swung his longsword which crashed through the foliage and dealt 10 damage to the hidden monster. During the attack, Wahesh’s face brushed against the plants. After the contact, the fighter did not feel well.

After cleaning the stable of the Demon’s Bile and centipede nests, Cando administered to Barnacleez’s wounds. The half-orc produced his wand of Cure Light Wounds and used two charges to heal all damage from the gnome.

After the chores were completed, the party went to the northeast to investigate the gazebo with Ro-Mahn followed closely by Stabem in the lead.

This wild garden is flush with colors and full of scents both sharp and sweet. A gazebo topped with a weather vane sits in the northeast corner of the garden.

As he strolled past, Ro-Mahn recognized that the garden is composed of many different kinds of poisonous plants, including hemlock, poison oak, belladonna, and even stranger growths, many of which are not native to Isger. Some of the plants have been imported from other countries, some of which are as distant as Sargava. He is aware that many of the poisonous plants found in the garden can be used as ingredients for antidotes or medicines.

If anyone wishes to harvest some, a successful Craft (alchemy), Heal, Knowledge (nature), or Survival check is required.

A rustling in the bushes to the left caught the attention of the party as the face of a giant frog emerged to confront Ro-Mahn. Unfortunately, the creature was not alone. A lengthy tongue shot from the bushes and targeted Lady Emyralda. The sticky appendage missed the nimble halfling.

Lady Emyralda swung her scimitar at the centipede. The blade struck the vermin and dealt 3 damage. The monster dropped and the cleric retreated behind Ro-Mahn with a thanks to Sarenrae as she did so.

The next centipede rushed forward to attack Cando. The monster’s bite failed to penetrate the half-orc’s armor. Another centipede emerged from the stall and moved up behind the other.

Cando charged one of the heads of his double-axe with arcane energy and took a swing at the monster. The attempt clattered off the chitinous armor of the monster. The follow-up swing with the second blade hit and dealt 3 damage. The half-orc stepped to the side into the third stall. Footing upon the purple sludge was little slippery and at the same time a little crunchy. Cando felt something pop under his boots.

Stabem stood ready to attack if an enemy moved past his vantage. Barnacleez waved Missy with a flourish and fired another Magic Missile. The spell hit the lead monster and dealt 5 damage. The vermin slumped to the ground.

With a clear path to the remaining monster, Ro-Mahn rushed forward and stabbed it with his cold iron rapier. The blade poked through the creature’s armored plates and dealt 10 damage. The vermin dropped and the fight was over.

Wahesh satisfied that things were well in hand stepped from the doorway and continued to survey the surrounding area for additional hostiles.

Further investigation of the stable revealed that the third and fourth stalls were covered in Demon’s Bile and each contained a nest of centipede eggs. Nothing of value was found.

The giant centipedes continued to hiss and chitter from the back of the stable. Cando stood his ground waiting for the monsters to attack. Growing impatient, Lady Emyralda rushed past the party and into the building.

The halfling closed the distance to the monsters brandishing her cold iron scimitar but was short of being able to effectively attack. The giant vermin stepped forward to meet her and bit the cleric; inflicting 2 damage. Luckily, the halfling was unaffected by the vermin’s poison. Another monster stepped into the hallway behind the first. Grumbling and shaking his head, Cando followed, moving after the cleric. The half-orc drew a dart and charged it with arcane energy as he moved. The ultimate throw went wide and missed the creature.

Stabem entered the building and stepped out of the hallway into the second stall. Barnacleez stepped up behind Ro-Manh and put Missy to work again. The Magic Missile from the wand struck the monster and dealt 4 damage.

Ro-Mahn moved into the stable behind Cando. He fired a sling bullet into the melee but missed his target. Wahesh attempted a shot with his short bow from the doorway but also missed the monster as he tried not to hit his friends.

After regrouping, the party pressed on to investigate the stable. Ro-Mahn and Stabem examined the doors and did not discover anything untoward. Ro-Mahn opened the door.

Bones litter the bare stone floor of this stable. The reek of decay hangs heavy in the air. Peeking out from the last two stalls, purplish, nearly pulsating goo can be seen.

Movement in the last stall indicating multiple creatures. A giant fiendish centipede emerged to confirm the occupants. Upon seeing the party, the creatures begin chittering and hissing.

Barnacleez stepped back but the monster followed him. The gnome put trusty Missy to use and unleashed a Magic Missile on the fey that dealt 5 damage. The drochtac snarled and shouted in Sylvan, “You will pay for your defiance” as it attacked the sorcerer. One claw slashed Barnacleez for 2 damage while the bite and second claw missed.

Wahesh stepped forward and attacked the two fiendish mites in front of him. The fighter’s cold iron weapons both struck each dealing 11 damage and 6 damage respectively. Both monsters fell to the ground. Ro-Mahn moved up to the drochtac and attacked with his cold iron rapier. The blade struck true and dealt 10 damage and dropped the creature.

Lady Emyralda step forward and attacked the southern-most mite with her cold iron scimitar. The attack missed the target. Stabem moved to assist the cleric brandishing his cold iron rapier. The blade struck the target, dealing 4 damage and dropped the foe.

With a clear line to the remaining enemy, Cando charged forward and struck a mighty blow upon the mite which dealt 10 damage and dropped the monster.

Ro-Mahn and Stabem took the lead and entered into the ground. Ro-Mahn started toward the stables while Stabem walked closer to the manor house. Cando and Wahesh following next flank Stabem while Barnacleez and Lady Emyralda brought up the rear.

After the party had entered the grounds, an explosion of activity launched from the bushes on either side of the path. From the left, a slithering creature with an inordinate number of sinewy limbs protruding from its sides, lashed out at Barnacleez. The maw on its disturbingly demonic face bit Barnacleez dealing 5 damage. The gnome also felt a little tingly but the sensation passed quickly.

From the right, four fiendish mites appeared. Each cast a Doom spell targeting Cando, Wahesh, Stabem and Lady Emyralda. All shrugged off the effects of the evil magic.

It takes about another hour to reach the Sarini Estate. As the party crests the top of a hill, they see the grounds before them.

The rusted, badly bent iron gate to this walled estate is dirty and hangs ajar, creaking gently in the breeze. The lawn is overgrown, and a thick tangle of vines has crept up the walls of the opulent estate building. An abandoned stable occupies the southwest corner of the grounds, and to the east, more buildings lie partly hidden behind bushes and crooked trees.

Wahesh ushered Olaus to the side as Cando started to dismember the fallen foes while humming a tune. Stabem searched the bodies for valuables but found only some unremarkable weapons.

The rest of the party gathered around the young man and listened to his story. At some gentle prompting, Olaus broke down and told the truth of the situation. “There was no calf. I was trying to sneak into the Sarini Estate and take something. The rest of the guys think I am a coward. I wanted to show them but it did not go the way I planned. Those monsters attacked me just outside the gates. I ran but they followed me. They chased me for a long time and caught me when I could not run anymore. I you had not come along, I fear what may have happened.”

The boy only had scrapes and bruises. His pride was hurt more than his body. After a few moments resting he was ready to move on. “Thank you again for saving my life. I will never go near that place again. I would like to go home now.”

Nolaria continued, “I fear that this may be too much for me as well. I will walk back with Olaus. It should be safer if we travel together. Good luck in your investigations. Remember the layout of the estate. To the right front is the mausoleum, the gazebo and gardens are toward the right rear and the stables are to the left front.”

The pair headed south down the road back toward Saringallow as the party prepared to continue to the Sarini Estate.

GoM: The Festering Blot - Turn Results 4

Ro-Mahn moved forward, drew his sling and fired at the Fiendish Mite on the left. The cold iron bullet hit the monster dealing 4 damage and cracked its head open, knocking it to the ground. Stabem moved ahead toward the monsters, stepping in front of Ro-Mahn.

Cando moved forward and drew a dart. The half-orc charged the projectile with arcane energy and hurled it at the Fiendish Giant Centipede on the left. The dart struck and dealt 6 damage and killed the monster. Lady Emyralda moved forward and drew her scimitar.

Nolaria took a 5-foot step, cast a Bless spell and drew her longbow. Barnacleez stepped forward and activated Missy, his wand. The Magic Missile struck the remaining Fiendish Mite. The spell overpowered the creatures spell resistance and dealt 4 damage, knocking the monster to the ground.

Wahesh charged forward and attacked the remaining Fiendish Giant Centipede. The slash from the fighter’s longsword struck home and dealt 7 damage which killed the vermin.

With the monsters dead, the boy in the road quickly got to his feet and thanked Wahesh. “My name is Olaus. Thank you for saving my life! I was out looking for a stray calf when these monsters attacked me. I have no idea where they came from.”

Wahesh was uncertain why but something about the boy’s story did not ring true.
